I am an Econ major and want to take UGBA 131 - Corporate Finance. UGBA 103 - Intro to Finance is listed as a prereq, but I would prefer to take Econ 136 - Financial Econ instead.

I read on a thread from a few years back that UGBA prereqs aren't enforced, but when I looked up 131 on the Berkeley schedule, there was a note that said: "Note: All students must put themselves on the wait list. Students must have UGBA 103 completed or in progress Fall 2012. Economics 136 cannot be used in place of UGBA 103."

They check. Everyone and I always start on the waitlist, and the lady checks it manually daily to see who has the pre-req and then manually moves them into the class. I don’t know how strictly they enforce it though because I’ve never been denied entry since I’ve always had the pre-reqs.

I am a business major. UGBA 131 and most other UGBA classes are hard to get into. You probably needed to Phase I the class and have an early Phase I to get in.

getting into 131 is easy, everyone drops by the 3rd or 4th week. it’s definitely not for everyone. I took the class last year and we dwindled down to 50 people pretty fast.

as for the prereqs question, they’re pretty enforced. especially since everyone is put on the waitlist and manually put into the class – very easy to make a decision on whether to let #1 on the waitlist in or a business major who is last on the waitlist: checking the prereqs. any excuse to kick out non-majors will be used to let the business majors take the classes they need to graduate.

A caveat to this is that, generally speaking, pre-reqs aren’t enforced over the summer. As a result, you may be able to enroll in UGBA 131 during the summer for this reason. I don’t know, however, if Haas still enforces pre-reqs over the summer, or if it’s just other departments that are more lax then.

I want to take Econ 136 and UGBA 131, but it looks like that won’t be possible and I won’t have time to take Econ 136 and UGBA 103 and 131. I saw this on a previous post about UGBA 131 and Econ 136 and was wondering if anyone else had any input on this topic:

“i’ve taken Econ 136, UGBA 131, and UGBA 132. Econ 136 pretty much covers everything in 103, 131, and 133. If i were you, i would take Econ 136 since it will teach you more material in less time. Also, when i took UGBA 131 and UGBA 132, the curve was EXTREMELY generous. UGBA 132 is probably the only other finance class in the UGBA series you’d want to take if you end up taking Econ 136.”
