How strictly is Berkeley requiring 3.0 GPA in last term?

Just curious if anyone ever heard about someone's offer being rescinded...

I'm likely to get 2B's and 1C this semester and like living in the hell right now. And no outstanding reasons why I am doing so poorly..

Considering that it is Berkeley…a 2.0ish GPA looks highly frowned upon for a newly admitted student. Do you need all of the classes that you are taking?

@ocnative yeah I know…I actually only need the English lit class, but that’s also I’m getting a C for…

@ljbcac‌ sorry but tbh i think that is grounds for being rescinded :frowning: however you can call them up and im sure theyll at least try to work with you to prevent you from getting rescinded

@ljbac I think they are willing to work with people. Be prepared to explain
the C and what you have been doing to raise your grade.
I think you have a chance.

They’re absolutely willing to work with people, but be prepared to defend yourself and have a damn good reason.

Anecdote from this semester: My buddy was accepted for mechanical engineering at Cal. He stupidly started cruising after the semester he applied. (He started working a job and did not study as much as he had been in previous semesters.) During winter quarter, he earned a C in both Introduction to Circuit Analysis and Differential Equations and received a B in 4C Physics. His GPA ended up being 2.56 for that quarter

He immediately notified admissions after he was accepted. His admissions officer asked him to explain his decline in academic performance, and he apparently wrote a pretty good response. The rep followed up by asking why he withdrew from “Programming in C++ for C Programmers” during Fall and why that particular class was dropped from his Spring schedule. He stupidly said something along the lines about how it was a class geared towards ComSci majors, that he was only taking the class as a prereq for UCLA, and how the class wasn’t required or asked by Berkeley.

He was rescinded in the next email.

Anyway, his UC GPA before that semester was 3.93 (not including two 2004 classes he took as a HS student, where he earned a C and B for an overall UC GPA of 3.81.) Other than one B his first semester in college, he was a straight A (+4 W) student for close to three years. However, they may have been a little more lenient on him since he’s a re-entry student who drove a semitruck for about two years after dropping out of San Jose State University (without receiving any letter grades, just Ws.) I’m just pissed off at him since we’re supposed to be roommates at Cal.

You have to talk to your Admissions Advisor. They are willing to work with you but it can be tricky.

@‌ calbro your friend out everywhere ? Did he get in another UC , where the conditions were different?

Davis and Santa Barbara rejected him off the bat. Davis asked him for winter grades and I’m guessing Santa Barbara looked at that information as well.

In addition to Berkeley, UCLA and San Diego accepted him. He didn’t complete all the prereqs for UCLA, and didn’t want to bother appealing/clarifying his grades for them. The conditions of admission for San Diego were to maintain a 2.0 gpa, so he SIR’d them after Berkeley said no.

@calbro, at least your friend has somewhere to go. I am sorry to hear he missed out on Berkeley and you lost a roommate. It seems they are pretty serious about their conditions. I guess it did not help it was a very competitive major.

@calbro‌ dang im sorry for your friend, id be absolutely devastated if that happened to me and i didn’t even get into UC Berkeley
