Im currently an incoming high school senior about to take AP Japanese and although i dont want to major in it, i definitely want to minor in it so i want a school with a good program…

BU seems amazing (i want to major in communications) but is the Japanee program very good? like are the professors/curriculum good? is there a lot of speaking japanese involved or do students just read from books (like i do in high school and it sucks xD)

All I know (rising senior too!) is that BU does not have one of those dorm floors for Japanese. So its Japanese program is probably not as good as the other languages.

We have a Japanese house, though. It’s a Bay State brownstone I believe. I had a friend who majored in Japanese studies and loved it. BU doesn’t have a study abroad program in Japan, sadly, but I know there is one you can apply for through BU. The IR department also has excellent professors specializing in East Asian studies. Professor Grimes is a baller.

um…so none of this was really about the Japanese language program, but I guess if it’s as good as everything else, it’s a-ok.

My friend’s roommate is a Japanese major. She will spend her upcoming junior school year in Kyoto. She loves the Japanese program at Boston University, along with the general East Asian studies. I believe she is also studying Chinese and Korean.

I have much less experience with the program; I took two semesters of Japanese with the same professor and enjoyed it immensely. I think all of the professors teach the same curriculum in the language classes. (I can’t comment on the Japanese literature classes.)

In my classes speaking played a large role. We had a textbook which was the source of all of the course material, but it was fairly easy to understand, and I don’t think anyone disliked using it. We did use the text book for some reading, but we did far more speaking than reading. Once we learned new grammar our professor made sure we understood it by verbally practicing it.

I had Hatano-sensei for a professor. She is incredibly nice and a bit goofy. She was also not as strict as other professors when it came to remembering kanji (a positive or negative aspect?).
