How students can save money on textbooks

Not exactly sure where to post this, so I'm setting it down here. Also, not sure if anyone else posted this earlier. If so, I apologize.

This is an interesting article about alternatives to paying the exorbitant prices on textbooks. The old standby of the yellow "USED" tape on the spine of the book is, apparently, just one way. Check it out.

How to Find Cheaper College Textbooks - Bucks Blog - NYTimes.com

two quick thoughts:

if youre going to go the online route, buy your books NOW. used textbook prices will only climb over the next two months. buying (a bit) early also provides a bit of a buffer should something with the online purchase be incorrect. also, should something be incorrect, know your rights when it comes to a refund or return.

while betterworldbooks does donate some of its proceeds to international literacy initiatives, its far from a charity. little more than 20 cents from each book put in its donation bins actually makes its way to the ‘betterworld’ part of its business. thats $2 of ‘betterworld’ from a typical semesters worth of books. you could do better by dropping them off at the local salvation army, let alone raising some real money (which could be donated to charity) by re-selling to the book store or using one of the very simple buyback sites (like textbooksrus) mentioned in the article.

I love half.com for buying and selling used books. The above poster is correct, buy your books NOW for a great price. As we get closer to the start of the semester there are fewer good deals to be had.

This is really important and it happened to us for a book that cost us about $150. We did get a complete refund and were refunded shipping costs.

I’ve sold many of my kids’ textbooks through Amazon. My son used to go online to buy his college texts, and then bring them home at the end of the semester for me to sell.

also check out amazon which is offering free Prime accounts to students. Second day air at no charge.

But the free shipping does not apply to Amazon Marketplace (where you find most of the used books…)
