How to actually READ a textbook?

So I have to read like more than half of my AP Euro textbook by next Thursday for a test, but every time I pick up the book and attempt to read it, I just get distracted or bored or something along those lines and can't seem to actually absorb any of the information.

Any tips? =/

Turn off your computer, lock your door, and read an entire chapter, no matter the length. Straight through. It’s painful and it’s a huge chunk of text that you will mostly forget, but you’ll remember the gist. Then take a four day break and repeat.

Try making an expanded outline like you would in a science class. I have this very useful because it makes you stop and think about what you just read and also results in you having a nice little study guide.
