How to appeal MIT financial aid?

how do you appeal for financial aid. My s got accepted at MIT ,sticker price 54,000.
Can somebody help me.

I’m assuming that you have already received MIT’s package? If your son has other acceptances and better packages then you might be able to get them to increase their package by calling and discussing how he really wants to go to MIT but… However, the other school needs to be comparable to MIT academically. For instance if your son applied to Harvard and is accepted you would have bargaining leverage with MIT because these two schools don’t like to lose a student to the other school. They will probably do everything they possibly can to sway you to attend their school.

Did you apply for financial aid with the original application or are you wanting to begin an application for financial aid now?

my s applied for aid at mit. when we got the package it did not mention any EFC.

How good was the offer?

Total 54,010
To meet your need, MIT offers you the following assistance
Fall-Federal direct unsub Stafford loan 2750

MIT work 1000

spring- unsub stafford loan 2750
MIt work 1000
Total awards 7500

Was your EFC 46,510? (54,101-7500)

Even tho MIT is a FAFSA and CSS school…what was your EFC on your FAFSA SAR? It sounds like it was quite high. Was it? Or does your child have a non-custodial parent with a high income?

MIT is essentially saying that your family (are you and the child’s father together?) can afford about $47k per year towards your child’s education. That suggests a high income and/or high assets.

To appeal such a FA package, you would have to demonstrate some extraordinary circumstance…such as high uncovered medical bills, long-term job loss, etc.
