How to approach professors for research?

<p>Just email them, or call and email?? Or do you actually arrange some kind of a meeting with them o_0?
Do you have to know them, or can they be strangers that you've never seen. </p>

<p>I know its a weird question, but small things like these make a big difference to me ;0</p>

<p>should the email be professional or long? Should it be very specific, pinpointing the exact research topic or a broad area.
Any help would be appreciated.</p>
