As a student, am I allowed to ask my counselor if I can see the secondary report and recommendations that she just submitted?? HOW to ask properly??

Yes you’re allowed to ask her. “Is it OK for me to see what is contained in the secondary school report that you sent to college X and the recomendation letter you attached? If there are any objections, I fully understand.”

Straight to the point.

To be able to view the recomendation, you have to had chose to not waive your right to FERPA. If you did waive your right, you’re not able to see what they wrote.

@Purple205: that’s incorrect. When you waive FERPA, it absolves the recipient college from ever having to disclose the letter of recommendation to you. It says NOTHING about what you can and can’t ask the actual rec letter writer.

Oops ok “This basically states that if you waive your rights you will not be able to get your recommendations from your college once you are attending. THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU CANNOT SEE THEM AT ALL. If your teacher allows you to see them, that is fine. If you do not waive your rights, you will be able to access your letters of recommendation once you enroll at your school.”
