How to ask for recommendations

I know which three teachers I liked the best, but I don't know how to approach them.

Additionally, the guidance office at my school scares the heck out of me. The last time I went in looking for my counselor, the ladies said:

"She no here. You go now. Shoo! Shoo!"

So, any tips for getting a recommendation from my teachers and guidance counselor?

I really don't want to resort to coming in with my parents...

If you want something that is important you get it. It isn’t hard asking a teacher for a recommendation unless you have misbehaved or been disrespectful in their class. Which you should never do. So simply go up mature and confident and ask! Approach them with manners and ask if they could take the time to do them.

Just ask them. I asked my teachers for recommendations at the end of my junior year. I just spoke to them before/after class and asked them if they’d be willing to write a recommendation for me. They responded enthusiastically. Make sure you ask them if they have specific requirements (brag sheets etc.) that they need you to do.

I didn’t need to ask my counselor for one because it’s just assumed at my school that a counselor recommendation is needed. However, since I go to a larger school I do have to fill out a brag sheet for my counselor.

I wouldn’t get your parents involved. You are responsible enough to do this on your own; like sps2014 said, if you want it, you ask for it.

Literally just ask, make sure it’s in an appropriate time and place, but really it’s not that difficult. If they agree, you will probably need to provide a resume or a personal statement or something. Try to get the teachers that know you best, not just the one whose class you did well in.

Listen to what everyone else is saying, just ask and don’t let those ladies who told you to shoo get in your head lol. I find it better when you go along with a friend to ask for a recommendation, so try that.

Thanks! It went great with my teachers, and my guidance counselor was much more polite than the receptionist lady (who was rude again). Judging from everybody’s reaction, I feel like I’m going to get a great letter!
