How to ask for recommendations?

What happens if your teacher recommendation has glaring grammatical errors or sentence structure errors…would that work against you (the rec is math teacher)…

No, it doesn’t work against you. You didn’t write it.

If multiple schools use the CommonApp, do you have to give each teacher another copy of the CommonApp form for each school?

This question has already been asked on this thread. Look at the previous posts. The answer is No, they photocopy one copy.

Three Questions

My school requires us to hand our teachers a folder but doesnt say what to include. What would you include in a folder asking for recommendation?

I know people say 2 recs but does 1 teacher and 1 guidance councilor rec count as 2?

Should i inform the teacher now (in summer) before i ask he/she?

You can include a resume, including your achievements, etc along with the forms, deadlines, school profiles(brief)

No. 2 teacher recs. 1 counsellor rec.

Yes.

Should counselors write about you as a whole, including all the various activities?

^ Yes. They should write about you as a whole. When they use examples (hopefully), they will include a few of your activities. But not all.

Okay. Should I get teachers with more funny examples of me or teachers who I’m positive can write well. For example, my English teacher can obviously write well, but he doesn’t know me as well as Physics teacher (who I’ve had two years, pulled multiple pranks on, got pranks pulled on by, and volunteer at his MS track team’s meets) or math teacher (two years also, HS track coach, NHS advisor senior year, but wrote a plain rec last year. Kind of my fault, didn’t give enough info). Majoring in actuarial science/statistics.

^second that question
Also, does the teacher’s teaching experience/ difficulty of the class that they teach matter more than how well they know you? My statistics teacher has been teaching WAY longer than my precal teacher, but my precal teacher knows me very well and not just as a student, but as a person as a whole.

Hi, I’m new to the site and I was wondering how many letters of recommendation can be sent in, especially for CommonApp. Is it okay/advisable to send in letters from an employer/extra curricular advisor/etc. in addition to the 2 teacher recommendations?

UZZhan: Why do you think the teacher’s teaching experience has an impact on how the recommendation will be perceived?

elevenmiss: You should read through this thread before you ask any questions about letters of recommendation.

Our “career councilor” person actually came into our class and told us that we should give small gifts (gift cards were her personal favorite, but she suggested cookies and stuff as well) and at the very least a thank-you card. She doesn’t actually write recs herself, so she wasn’t telling us to give it to her, but her husband is a teacher somewhere, and she says she is always happy for her husband to write recs expecting they’ll get something in return.

I wouldn’t give it until after the apps are over and everything though. If you come up to them with a gift and your rec it’ll be like bribing…

Oh tell u what, send a card that if opened punctures a small vial containing Methane Isocyanide … that’ll stop her from asking gifts for her husband which she herself should buy …

OK! Does ANYBODY know how to send Fee-Waiver requests online???

Is it a bad idea to ask two foreign language teachers for recs? In my case my English and Latin teacher.
At the moment, they are the only teachers, that are fluent in english and would write a good rec for me. At least the only ones I know of.

That’s fine. Make sure that the schools you’re applying to don’t set restrictions on whom you may ask.

I didn’t think there was anything wrong with our councilor saying that. Her husband doesn’t even work at our school, so it wasn’t like she was asking us to give him stuff. She was just giving some advice because she knows from experience how much the teachers appreciate it. My point is, after recs get your teachers something, even it’s something small.

And I was just trying to infuse some smiles into a old, weary thread! Nevermind!

As far as I’ve checked, they don’t. Thanks.

This is a dumb question but… When you give your teacher the stamped/addressed envelopes, what should the ‘from’ address be? The school’s?
Also, suppose I ask my teacher to write a rec this monday; would it be reasonable to expect him to be done by about October 10? And do I give him the envelopes when I ask for the rec or later? And what other documents do I give him (besides the college supplement forms)?

Yes, the school’s (although it really doesn’t matter - the envelope will likely be tossed anyway).

No, it’s not reasonable. It all depends on how busy your teacher is, and how many other recommendations he has to write. Why do you need them by October 10?

You give him the envelopes, the deadlines for each college, and any resume/summary of activities etc. that you want him to have once he agrees to write the letters.
