How to ask for recommendations?

My college recommendation questionnaire asks me what my greatest strength is. It might be on some college supplements too.
Is it totally arrogant to say my intelligence?

I was planning on applying Early Action to 2 schools, and the deadline is November 1. I havenā€™t even asked any teacher yet and I need two letters of recommendation. If I ask them now will 25 days be enough for them to have it finished?

I think everyone under the sun will ask their teachers for recommendations. To stand out, you might consider some outside expert or mentor for recommendation, as long as they are relevant to your talent needed for college.

This is probably a dumb question, but itā€™s something I canā€™t seem to be able to find a clear answer to. On the Common App counselor evaluation, it says ā€œFeel free to attach a letter of recommendation. Alternatively, you may attach a letter from another school official who could better describe the student.ā€
My counselor doesnā€™t know me AT ALL, but Iā€™m on really good terms with the principal both personally and school-wise. So Iā€™m hoping that that means that I could ask the principal for a letter of recommendation rather than the counselor and send that into colleges in place of a counselorā€™s letter. Is that alright? Would a college that requires a counselorā€™s letter take a letter from a principal instead?

Is it advisable, especially for applying early, to ask for rec letters in the spring of your Junior Year if you already have a pretty good idea of who you want to write your letters?

What I did was ask them nicely u want a teacher that u at least known for 2 years and did pretty good in their class, and then hand them a resume about stuff that u have done, and tell them a little bit about the school ur applying to.

When I asked my teachers, I simply went to them and asked if they would write one. I asked my AP Physics teacher even though I only got a 2 on the test. I would recommend asking teachers you got to know on a personal level, not just as a student. About half of the teachers I asked wanted me to write a CV for them to give a broader perspective. And if you are applying to many schools, a lot of teachers will just write a generic one that the counselor can copy and send out. Also, be sure to give your teachers at least a month notice, since you probably arenā€™t the only one asking. Good Luck.

yeah, sure!
i have a friend who goes to TJ (number 1 public school in america) and she told me that practically all of the students ask their teachers before the end of their junior year of hsā€¦ as for my school (not competitive at all) ā€¦ i donā€™t think i know a single student who did that.
personally, i donā€™t think it really matters. if you want to ask early, you could just ask as soon as your senior year starts. that alone is plenty of time :).

In Texas, the Universities only accept 2 letters and we are allowed to read them and mail them oursevles

Should I give my recommenders a gift? Theyā€™ve already finished sending their recommendations, and itā€™s close to Christmas. Plus I love them. (: I donā€™t know if itā€™s strange or inappropriate though.

Go for it!

Itā€™s getting kind of close to deadlines and I have yet to ask one of my teachers to write me a recommendation. But I just talked to my counselor who let me know I that could ask a certain teacher (I was unsure of whether asking him would fulfill a certain requirement, but now I know it does). Thing is, I am really nervous about asking him. I want him to write a college-specific recommendation, along with a general one. Now, Iā€™m not asking him for two entirely different letters. Most likely, he would just add the extra stuff to the college-specific one.

Iā€™m trying to think of a way to say all I need to say in a nice, casual way. I want him to know that deadlines are coming up, but I donā€™t want him to feel rushed (even though I know he will be). Also, Iā€™m not sure if both letters will be done online, but I know at least one will be through Common App. If not both, the other would just be sent through regular mail.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Would a college find it acceptable if I gave a letter of reccomendation from my chorus teacher? Iā€™m not going into music, but my teacher knows me well, and Iā€™ve been in the select group for a while.

@SamBelden - That probably wouldnā€™t count as one of the main letters of recommendation, but you could certainly send it as a supplemental one! You will still need two letter from core teachers (math, science, english, history, foreign language).

Does anyone know whether teachers are supposed to upload a Word file for a recomendation or to scan a printed recommendation with a signature?

I am an international applicant and my teachers have no idea what to doā€¦

Iā€™m in a weird situation- so thereā€™s this one teacher (literally ONE) who doesnā€™t like me, mostly just because she doesnā€™t like anybody except for a handful of nationally ranked math geniuses (who donā€™t like her in return). I kind of hate her because she made my classmates and me practically self-study BC calc on top of our already busy schedules. Yet for my MITES application, she is the only teacher who I can ask for my math teacher rec, so I HAVE to ask her. BTW she isnā€™t my current teacher so too late for sucking up, which I wouldnā€™t do anyway. Any tips on how to ask her?

I am currently a junior and am thinking about which teachers I want to write my college recommendation. I have this one teacher in mind who I think really knows me as a person. However, I had him as a sophomore for an AP class but I do not have him this year. I will have him again next year as a senior. But he has known me since freshman year because I am in a club that he runs. Is it bad if I ask a sophomore year teacher to write my recommendation? I mean, heā€™s known me since freshman yearā€¦ and I think he really likes me. I did really well in his class and pretty good on the AP (4) but I didnā€™t talk much during class. But I talked to him A LOT outside of class so he knows me as a person as well. In this case, would it be okay if I asked him to write my recommendation? I know weā€™re supposed to ask junior year teachersā€¦but is this okay? In this case? How would this affect my chances of getting into some colleges? Thanks so much!

Unicornrainbow, thatā€™s okay! As long as you think you did well in that teacherā€™s class and he knows you pretty well, then itā€™s fine to ask him to write a rec letter for you. You donā€™t really have to ask teachers from your junior year; thatā€™s just the common way of asking for rec letters. But since that teacher would have known you for three years by the time you graduate, then you shouldnā€™t worry about it so much. Good luck!

^Thank you! TThat was very helpful. But what if the teacher doesnā€™t really remember how I did in that class?

^You can send a brief letter reminding the teachers some major events that your teacher would know that you have done well in (e.g. club events, competitions, classes, etc.). Usually, teachers wonā€™t forget students that have done really well in their courses, so I wouldnā€™t worry too much about it.
