How to Attack the SAT Critical Reading Section Effectively

This advice actually worked for me…

Hey…I’ve heard that these tips are really good but I’m kinda confused about what they actually are…Does anybody have a consolidated list of Noitaprep’s advice? (there’s just so many pages to look at!)

I’d really really appreciate that. Thanks so much!! :)

Wow… GREAT thread. Very intelligent and a must read.

this strategy only works if you practice a lot with it.
for those who are short on time, the way to go is to:

 1. Read the blurb
 2. Read the passage as quickly as you can while still understanding it
 3. Read question, don’t read answer choices, and search for answer.
 4. Eliminate wrong answer choices until 1 left. Search to confirm that the one left is supported by passage
 5. Don’t bubble in until you answer all of the ones about that particular passage. Just circle the right answer.
 6. For short passages, look at the questions first, and then read the passage.
 7. Good luck.

sporty04, just read the first page…

This method took some time to get used to, but once I got used to it, it really helped me read faster and more accurately! Thank you!

Noitaraperp, for the SAT essay, how many example paragraphs would you recommend?

I’ve heard that we need five paragraphs (intro, three body paragraphs, and conclusion) to have a greater chance of getting a 6 but is that true…because others told me two body paragraphs are enough to get the 6.

How many example paragraphs did you write?

thanks :)

It’s obvious that focus is the key; we all do know that but… it’s always difficult to maintain your focus…
how can one keep focus and maintain it?
suggest some tips that we all left uncared and unpracticed

i must be the only person to go from 740 to 550 :frowning:
the method does not work for me

as far as I can see, these strategies are equally applicable to the ACT reading test as well. Many thanks for posting this! pure genius.

For people using this method: Do you underline vocab in context lines as well? Do you answer these questions while reading the passage as you would to other line reference questions or would answering these “disrupt” flow?

Thanx for this method Noitaraperp , it improved my points by 110 points.

Noitaraperp,
this might sound confusing but I have a question…if the question on a reading comp question says to use line reference 22-28 but you find the answer in line 10, would you say that answer choice is definitely the wrong answer because it’s not found in the specified lines and is found in other lines…or can I still use other lines to back up the answer choice that I think is correct?

and…

would you recommend two or three body paragraphs in an SAT essay?

THanks!

Noitaraperp: I took a critical reading test in PR book yesterday and reached a 550. Does that mean on the real test, I would expect to see a 540+ since the PR is a bit more stressful?

I’ve been getting 400s on the CR section and my third and finalth time will be January 23 and I’m expecting to score good on the Verbal. Do you have any advice for someone who has only 1 chance left to make it?

great post!

hey HopefulEagle86

im also taking the jan. 23 sat after scoring a 1690 on my first sat in november- 580 math 610 reading and 500 writing

after following noitaraprep’s advice and studying for 1 hr 30 minutes 3 days a week I am now scoring a consistent 1950: 720 math 600 writing 630 reading

All you need is practice! Dont give up lets see how we do on January 23

IM SORRY THIS IS A REALLY LATE REPLY I DID NOT SEE THE DATE ON YOUR COMMENT HOPEFULLY YOU SEE THIS

cornetking

I do underline vocabulary in context because the SAT questions ask what the word means in context. Knowing what’s around the word is key.

Hi Noitaraperp!

What are your thoughts about CR workbooks? I have both Peterson’s and Barron’s CR workbooks, are they worth doing/any help?

Thanks a lot!
Jason

I find this interesting how people are posting but noitaraperp is not replying.

JAYRK, gah… im a senior. lol
my highest score right now is a 1510. however, took a hard practice today, cracked a 1680 or 1700 (without my stupid mistakes for the writing and 1 question on the reading) – (was from blue book).

looking for 1900-2000 by january. i WON’T stop… but im a bit afraid.
