How to back out after submitting intent to enroll?

I already submitted my intent to enroll for a school I thought I was positive that I wanted to go to, but then I decided that I really don't want to go to that school anymore and I think a different school would be a better choice for me. I know I would probably not get the intent to enroll fee back but I'm sure there is a way I can back out of going to this school, but how?

Does anyone know how I can do this?

Just send the admissions office an email. Thank them for their time (and any generous financial aid offer if there was one) and tell them that your plans have changed and that you will not be enrolling this fall.

Then send your deposit off to the second place.

Don’t worry about this at all. Plans do change, and college admissions offices do not expect that everyone who makes a deposit will actually show up for the first day of class.

bbe334 - this happens routinely for a student who was successful in gaining admission from a waitlist. From a timing standpoint, they had to send a deposit to one school to meet the deadline but then hears from their waitlist school anywhere from 2-4 weeks later.

I would suggest sending a written letter, not an email; colleges may want some assurance this isn’t one of your “friends” playing a cruel prank. But it you do it thru your logon on their website you would also be ok.

BTW before you do anything take a day or two to think about it; you don’t want to do this and then change your mind again! Google “buyers remorse” for more on the subject.

If it’s a top school, they probably won’t care in the least.

They have others ready and willing to take your place.

But as another person noted, this is little different than a kid who at the last minute gets accepted off the wait list at his favorite school.

The college you are backing out of no doubt has a wait list too, and has no qualms about accepting students off that wait list even though it means that those kids are revoking their acceptances at other schools to accept a spot off the wait list.
