My son is a 16U AAA player on a competitive Mid-Atlantic club team. He is currently an honors freshman in a good public school district although the school's hockey program is weak. He will be applying to boarding school in Fall 2014 as a repeating sophomore. What is the best way for me to get him in front of prep school hockey coaches, i.e. select teams, development camps, showcase tournaments? We are interested in a school with robust academics, not just a 'hockey' school. He has visited The Hill School, met the coach, and loved it! Any other recommendations? What should our next steps be? Thanks!

Do you mean a repeat freshman, or is he a current sophomore?

I think the best way would be to have him play as much as possible. If you can get him in a showcase, great! But, if not, don’t worry about it. Just make sure to meet with the coaches during visits, stay in contact with them, and probably send a video of his playtime.

Thanks pdl100. He is currently a freshman and will apply to the schools in the fall of his sophomore year. Do you recommend any specific showcases?

I have absolutely no idea-- sorry. That was a general recommendation based on sports and my limited knowledge of hockey. Additionally, you might keep in mind the idea of attending a school with a hockey team that is slightly underrated- he might be guaranteed a spot on varsity and offered leadership and play opportunities he wouldn’t get at a school recruiting from all over the country.

I can’t speak to hockey but what we did with our child was send highlight video. That and the resume of club and school teams did the trick. Child was solicited by other schools who happened to see child at showcase. They approached him but we were not interested in their schools so did not pursue. We made sure to meet with coaches at interviews (they had video and brief introductory email prior to interview). Child was told by coaches that admissions had been told application had their full support.

Does your son have highlight video?

Also use coach as recommendation. That helps.

@bethasd - This doesn’t answer your question but it may provide useful info (if you haven’t already seen it ) :

All the best and Good Luck!

Video his hockey games & document his game stats. Edit the video to get it down in length to just the key moments. Upload the video link, along w stats & coaches recs into some website where you can email the prep school coaches the URL link.

Next, visit each prep school’s website and visit the athletics page to find out who the hockey coaches are and their email addresses. Send an email to the coaches and to the Admissions Office to express your interest in the school, and include the URL link in the email.

Good luck,
