How to begin an organization on a CITY-wide level.

im interested in beginning a cultural organization to initiate cultural shows/programs for the area, fundraisers, and events that promote culture among teens, but because i dont have a diverse population at school, i thought it would be best to begin something like this on a larger level (large as in the city of chicago LOL).

Where should i start? I've tried contacting some cultural leaders and a couple of pre-exsisting organizations (run by older people)..but have had no response at all!

This is a dream of mine...really...but i just cant get started!

No offense, but a lot of kids have dreams, and the vast majority are not able to pull them off. Still, good luck to you.

Do you have anything more substantive than “culture”? It sounds like you are talking about some kind of multicultural organization, but I don’t really understand what. I think it would be good if you fleshed out the details a little more. I understand that you may have privacy concerns or concerns on someone stealing your work, so feel free to PM me if you trust me. Also, it sounds like there are preexisting organizations, so if your idea isn’t very unique, then you might not be worried. It would really be helpful to know a little more about your intended organization. Could you at least link to one of the preexisting organizations?

I’m also interested in why you want to create such an organization if other ones already exist.

Furthermore, while there are some organizations that start on a city-wide level, I don’t think it is very feasible to start one with other well-established competitors in such a large city. I would focus on a smaller scale, like your neighborhood (assuming diverse enough) or around some kind of institution (church?).

Would love to hear more about your dream!

Ditch the dreams, and get a real job (fastfood or retail, not some cushy internship). Then tell me if you still have those dreams. I hate to be a nay sayer, but there is a reason older people are directing those organizations.

What type of culture are you promoting?

Let me guess, you are trying to promote Indian (as in India, the south Asian country) culture? I have browsed thru your thread history, so i think i have a pretty good idea.

Whats wrong with American culture? Please don’t answer that question, LOL!

I think you will have a hard time promoting Indian culture, beyond Indians that is. I hail from California, and experiencing other cultures is just a part of daily life (outside of the oc, that is). Some cultures seem to have more of a draw than others, though. I hate to say it, but Indian culture is not one of them.

I will allow some introspection in order to allow you to answer why that is (hint: why didn’t you mention it right away?). If you still can’t figure it out just reply on this thread.

WOW! That was weird, i predicted you had an internship (the first post) before i browsed thru your thread history. I am getting pretty good at predicting people’s predicament’s through their subtle language.

Reading some more, its amazing how you sound somewhat like me. MY ADVICE would be: GET YOUR ARSE IN GEAR AND FOCUS ON YOUR DARNED SCHOOLWORK AND EC’s, AND DON’T BLEED OUT SENIOR YEAR. RELAX? FORGET IT! OTHERWISE YOU WILL END UP IN. . . COMMUNITY COLLEGE!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Focusing on EC’s does not include your silly community org idea. I am thinking National Honor Society, or some other well established and respected group.

Lets just say, once upon a time i was a loner bookworm with a friend who performed slightly worse than me academically, but with his ec’s (national honor society), he got a FULL RIDE to University of California Irvine. Not the best school, but it cost him NOTHING!

I hate thinking about that, i hate it, and myself.
Hopefully this continuous self loathing is therapeutic.

Okay, wow. This is absolutely ridiculous. I dont even know what prompted me to post my idea on here. Comrade, gee, thanks for doing a background check on my history, before posting…i appreciate it :/. Ive been around these forums for a while now..and I have always been especially cautious about my words…I never want to discourage anyone..and I am sure I’ve never done so on this forum. Yeah, and school work, that IS my priority…please don’t worry. THis group is something I’ve been constantly thinking about, and I was just looking for some HELP.

Yes, I am AWARE that other organizations regarding culture exsist. BUt, NONE of these organizations are directed towards OUR age group…as in teens and students. I come from a predominantly white school, where I’ve gotten little chance to interact with individuals of other cultures. …that’s the one thing I know i will miss in my entire high school experience.

So, ur question: whats wrong with Americans? NOTHING. ALL my friends are americans for your information. You had absolutely no reason to ask such a question. I only came here to post my idea and look for some help. Now, I regret and I actually feel embrassed. SO, thanks for that.

However, I am determined in forming this group. So, if you think I cant do it..that was a form of encouragement in itself. I’ve gotten this response from a couple other people. I am NOT crazy. I dont how to do it, so i was looking for some perspectives, now i got them… and i will continue…somehow.

Oh yes, and Comrade, I think you’ve misunderstood my goal completely. So, I DONT think you have pretty good idea…but ur attempt was certainly noticed. Um. Thanks.

Mods. I do not know how to close a topic. Please feel free to do so, this was useless.

Um..ComradeD: try not to triple post with intervals of maybe twenty minutes. And try to give helpful advice. Ex: National Honor Society is not prestigious. That’s your idea of an EC? I highly doubt that’s what got him into UCI…on a full scholarship…

OP: You still haven’t fleshed out your idea…

PBailey, Thanks for still looking at this thread. However, as my previous post states, I am no longer looking for any so-called “advice” regarding this topic based on the attitudes given previously.

But, once again thanks for your concern. I really appreciate it!

I disagree with your assesment of NHS, although I concede using the term prestigious is an overstatement, but that was a result of writing this stuff at 5am (and no,i didn’t just wake up).

Perhaps it varies chapter to chapter, or how you score on the exams (I think nhs has exams or something). I know the NHS group at my school did quite a bit of volunteer work. Pretty much everyone at my school who was on NHS did very well for themselves, and the student i mentioned did not do much else other than nhs, have a gpa close or over 4.0 (like i did until senior year), score 3 to 5 on the majority of his ap’s (i actually did better than him on the ap front), and that was pretty much it.

Maybe he did a little more volunteer work for another group or something, but that was it.

I think he got accepted to UCLA and CAl too, but he chose the free ride.

Finally, HardWorker, why not just start your own club at school?
