How to begin research

So I decided with a few friends to try and do some research, and mostly just spun our wheels for quite a while. Finally, we sent out a quite a few emails to chem professors at georgia tech. A few wrote back, and long story short, one is trying to set up with his grad students to work with us on setting up a research project. Other than personal connections, how did you start your research?

I was taking a course at a community college. I talked to my professor and he introduced me to his friend, who was a grad student in my field of interest and essentially became my research mentor/advisor.

A mentor? Wow!

i've done some simple probability experiments on my own. that's how i first got a strong understanding of calculating some probabilities.
not high tech research, but it can be interesting =)

Went straight to a college nearby, to their Physics floor, and, starting from the left to the right, knocked at each door, and asked each professor sitting there about whether they needed any help over that summer. One of them said "OK"...
