How to better improve test scores

Took the ACT for the first time and got a 28… not what I was hoping to get. Has anyone raised their score a good amount from the first time to the latest time? How? Specifically need help with the math portion of the test. Thanks!

My daughter used Barrons ACT 36 (3rd Edition is the current one) and Princeton Review ACT Math and Science to fine tune her math. Both available on Amazon. Good luck!

Like what Tester1902017 noted, the most critical thing to improving your test score is to know your weak points. While you may dismiss your mistakes as simple or stupid, more often than not, they are the result of your habits, so pay attention to what you miss! I took the standard SAT test track. First time I took it, I bombed. Then I took a break to review all the information. Took it again, still unsatisfactory in terms of making myself competitive at more reach colleges. Since I already reviewed the specifics, I then just took practice tests. Take as many as possible. Checkout test prep books from your local school or county/city library. If your school has a career center, they might have some too. Time yourself and get used to the pace of answering. Also don’t time yourself and allow for a chance to truly get used to the question formats in-depth but going slowly through a test. After each, I suggest carefully combing through and identifying what you missed. What I and some of my friends did was write down every single question we missed, what answer we chose, the correct answer, and how to get that correct answer. We all started noticing patterns and were able to identify areas that we needed to do some extra review. It may seem redundant, but muscle memory is a true concept. Once you write it down, there’s a higher chance that you’ll remember it the next time you test. This particularly is helpful for those who have difficulty with math!

I took the SAT not the ACT, but what really helped me raise my score was understanding WHY I got questions wrong on the practice tests. Did you run out of time? Did you forget geometry? Was it just a silly mistake? Watching for trends and correcting them will help for sure, no matter which test you’re taking.
