My photography teacher showed me SCAD's program and I really enjoyed it. I've also liked reading up on Urban Design and the idea about planning a city. But I'm in my junior year of high school and I have literally no experience in anything relating to architecture (no drawing courses, no computer science, no calc). My courses for the next two years are pre-selected as a result of being in the IB Program.

Are there any suggestions as how to test out if architecture is right for me? Would drafting be a reasonable class to take to see if I'm truly interested in this major/career?

I would suggest going to a summer program. I have found them to be extremely helpful in deciding whether or not architecture is right path for me. You will mostly get an introduction of what life as and architecture student is like and some of the work you’d be dong. Find the schools you are interested in attending and see if they offer a summer program.

followyourheart, I heartily agree with Grantl345’s suggestion. My son enrolled in one the summer after his sophomore year in high school, confirming his passion to study architecture and enabling him to visit a college with an accredited architecture program that interested him before he applied there. Knowing early on his interest in pursuing architecture helped him to focus on applying for and securing summer positions in the field before attending college.

My son’s middle school classmate who also attended a high school summer architecture program would concur that enrolling was a good decision, even though he came away from the program deciding that architecture wasn’t for him. By exploring the field early, he saved time and money by majoring in college in a related field that was more to his liking instead of architecture. It seems like a win/win proposition to me, even if you decide after next summer that architecture isn’t for you. Best of luck!
