How to calculate GPA for ALL FOUR years of high school.

Is it calculated per-semester, or per-class? For example:

Per-semester:
Grade 9: 3.8; 4.0
Grade 10: 4.4; 4.2
Grade 11: 4.8; 4.8
Grade 12: 5.0; 4.8

You would add them up and divide by eight (for the eight semesters).

OR

Per-class:
Grade 9: 4, 4, 4, 4, 3; 4, 4, 4, 4, 4
Grade 10: 5, 5, 4, 4, 4; 5, 4, 4, 4, 4
Grade 11: 5, 5, 5, 5, 4; 5, 4, 4, 4, 4
Grade 12: 5, 5, 5, 5, 5; 5, 5, 5, 5, 4

You would add them up and divide by forty (the number of classes taken)

It may not seem like this matters, but it does. For example, I could take only three classes junior year (with cc classes to substitue) and have them all APs with a 5.0 GPA. But I would have the same GPA if I was to take six or seven APs (and get all As).

Ask your GC as I believe this can vary. Some schools weight differently so imagine they calculate GPA differently.
I think your best guess is the second. That is how we calculate. Add the numerical values associated with each grade for each class, then divide by total number of classes. Don’t forget any high school level classes you may have taken during middle school depending on your schools progression (often first year of foreign language & Alg1).

you also have to acccount for half-year versus full-year courses if you have both lengths … with the full year courses counting twice as much

As your school for a copy of your transcript. Your GPA will be on that.

It’s hard for us to guess how your school calculates.

My kids’ school only puts a year-end grade on transcripts. So, if the year-end grade is an A in all subjects, you end with a great GPA (even if you had a couple of B’s in various quarters).

At our school you add up the GPA for each semester and divide by the # of semesters.

Does anyone know how to convert Canadian high school percentage average to the 4.0 GPA system? :S

my guidance counselor doesn’t know, and I don’t know, and I have people telling me that the conversion chart isn’t quite accurate…

It’s usually by per semester.
