Hi, I'm from Canada, and we talk about marks on the 100 scale, so I don't really understand how to convert it to the American GPA scale. Does 4.0 mean a 100 average? and what's the difference between Weighted and UW and how do you calculate both?

Also, is it for all 4 years of high school or just 11 and 12 or what?

GPA in the US is for all 4 years of high school. Some schools do A 90-100, some do 93-100, and others do 94-100. Then some schools are ■■■■■■■■ like mine and do 96-100=4.0.
One of the things about GPA is that you don’t convert from numerical average to the 4.0 scale. You may have an A average (Like a 93) but have gotten a few B’s. You would not have a 4.0.

The best way I can tell you to calculate is this:

(4(# of A’s)+3(# of B’s)+2(# of C’s)+1(# of D’s)+0*(# of F’s))/(# of classes attempted)

If your school doesn’t calculate a GPA it won’t matter so much although you’ll be hurt if your school doesn’t rank. Some US schools are sympathetic to Canadians and their grading scales and others aren’t. Frankly this would all be easier if schools came up with whatever grading scales they like and simply report letter grades with pluses and minuses.
