What is the normal procedure for calculating weighted and unweighted GPA’s? I understand the difference between the two GPA types, but I am not sure if I am calculating it correctly. The work listed below is what I currently understand.
From what I understand, the unweighted is an average of all your courses on a 4.0 scale, with the values:
4 = A
3 = B
2 = C
1 = D
1 = F
For weighted, there is a .04 bonus per .50 credit for honors and .08 bonus per .50 credit for AP/Dual Enrollment. Would this mean that I take my unweighted value, then add all the bonuses?
For example, let’s say I had this class schedule:
History - 1 Credit - B
Language - 1 Credit - A (Honors)
Math - 1 Credit - A (AP)
Science - 1 Credit - B
Dual Enrollment - 3 Credits - A
Dual Enrollment - 5 Credits - A
My Unweighted Would Be: (3 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4) / 6 = 23 / 6 = 3.83
Weighted Would Be:
1 Credit * .04 = .08 (Language)
1 Credit * .08 = .16 (Math)
3 Credit * .08 = .48 (Dual)
5 Credit * .08 = .80 (Dual)
Total: 1.52
3.83 (Unweighted GPA) + 1.52 (Bonus) = 5.35
So, do I have the right idea of all this?
For unweighted GPA, you have the right idea except that your courses should be weighted by credit as well. You need to convert your dual-enrollment (college) credits to high school credits somehow. My high school said 1 college credit hour = 0.2 high school credits, but it will depend on your school.
There’s no standard way to calculate weighted GPA, especially because some high schools offer more honors/AP courses than others.
It’s weird how a D and a F get the same weighting. At my high school, F is 0.0.
Yeah, I missed that when I looked at it the first time. F should be 0.
Yes, weighting is very different. Ours is much more straight forward for an AP class you get 5 for an A, 4 for a B etc. The thing that really drives me crazy though is we have different GPAs as well (such as “academic” or 10-12 or academic 10-12)…Too many options. Makes reporting a GPA (especially for scholarships that just say “what is your GPA?”) difficult. Do they want weighted or unweighted and what years (or courses) to include? I’m grateful when they just want to look at a transcript. That tells the story right there.
Yeah F was meant to be 0. Typed it in incorrectly. Anyone else with more advice in terms of dual enrollment and weighted GPA?
