how to calculate UC GPA

is it only from 9th to 11th grade?

i have IB courses. What extra credit do I get? Is an 'A' a 5, 'B' a 4, and so for each course??

UC GPA is based on 10th to 11th grade.
UC also caps the amount of honors/AP courses to 8 semesters. So you can only get a maximum of 8 extra points from honors/AP classes.

I don't know about IB classes though.

ap/ib classes = 5, but capped at 8 semester's worth

what do you mean "capped at 8 semester's worth"?

it means when you calc your UC gpa, you can only receive 8 bonus points.

For example, let's assume you take 5 UC-approved honors/ap classes in both your Soph and Junior Years. Your UC gpa would be 4.8 in Soph Year (8 semesters * 5) + (2 semesters *4) = 48/10 = 4.8, and your Jr year gpa would only be 4.0 bcos you already used up your 8 bonus points. Thus, total UC gpa would be 4.4.

No offense, but that is EXTREMELY stupid.

Basically they do that so that students who go to schools without a massive number of AP, IB, or Honors classes (ie lower income schools) aren't completely excluded from going to a UC school.

But they are also including the slackers at good high schools with a mediocre class load.

ok...I kinda get the hang of it...but I don't know which IB courses at my school are approved. Can anyone give me a rough idea of what my UC GPA would be? Also, do electives count??
10th grade (no IB/AP available so i'll just write what I got in all)
- 7 A's and 4 B's
11th Grade
- IB Math HL A/A
- IB Chem HL A/A
- IB Physics HL A/A
- IB Economics HL C/B
- IB English SL C/B
- IB Thai A/B
- IB Theory of Knowledge B/no course
- 1 elective A/no course

by definition, all AP and IB courses are UC-approved for the bonus point. Academic electives do count if they are the UC a-g list; things like Health, Drivers Ed, auto shop, basket-weaving are excluded.

If we assume that all Soph grades are non-weighted, and your Jr elective is a-g, then:

10th gr
74 = 28
43 = 12

11th gr
84 = 32
43 = 12
2*2 = 4

Total = 88 + 8 bonus points = 96 grade points

96 points divided by 25 semesters = 3.84 UC gpa
