I recently got into the CAS for Environmental Biology, but in the months since submitting my application I have considered going pre-med. How hard would it to gear my major towards pre-med? Besides the bio/pre-med departments, are there any other areas for which WUSTL is known well for? How easy is it to change your majors and switch schools at WUSTL anyway? I've heard that the school is pretty flexible, but the relativity is ambiguous because I have nothing to compare it too.

Pre med is not a major at most schools. My son is a freshman there and majoring in Latin and doing the pre med curriculum. My generic answer is that you can major in anything at any school and still be considered pre med, although premed is really a bunch of courses needed as a prerequisite for medical schools. It is quite easy to change majors at WUSTL and even double major. Yes, WUSTL is pretty flexible.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I already know that pre-med is not a major and was simply wondering if it was as easy as WashU propaganda said to change majors at WUSTL. I love the fact that they encourage students to study at their different schools so I can learn graphic design and the classics while applying for med school.

I actually knew a handful of art students were on pre-health tracks, so it’s definitely doable.
(A few are now in med school, and 1 in dental I think?)

I think that changing majors is pretty standard at all schools, so I’m not sure if WUSTL is really different in that regard, but they do have a pretty flexible curriculum.

BTW lulugirl, my son is a freshman majoring in Classics at WUSTL and wants to go into medicine. I majored in French and have been a Cardiologist for 14 years.

People switch majors and even schools all the time. It’s pretty easy- it’s not just propaganda.

It is VERY easy to switch schools/majors. I have friends who have switched out of the business school, into artsci; from artsci to engineering; art school to artsci; etc etc.

I am under the impression WUSTL admits you to a school and not a major. It sounds like it is not hard to change schools and if your major is the same school, you should have no problem picking whatever it is that you want to do.

WashU allows people to change majors and schools easily. I could transfer from ArtSci to Olin easily as long as I had 3.0 GPA. However, I am pretty sure it is much more difficult to switch schools or majors at UPenn, UT Austin, or Michigan. I think this is because WashU accepted everyone on equal standard, unlike some schools like UPenn where the freshmen at Wharton could be considered to be more intelligent that those at CAS.
