How to choose First Year Seminar?

Prairie, for First Year Seminar listings with class times, go to Academics, then Course Catalog, then Smith College Course Catalog. When that page opens, select what term you want, select First Year Seminars for the Department/Program and push the button at the bottom. That should do it! The fact that I’m informing someone about how to get around a website is hilarious as I’m the most computer-illiterate in the family! Let me know if you have any problems and I’ll try to help.

My D got Geology in the Field - not her first choice, although she’s willing - wanted italian cinema and is already taking other science and wonders if it will be too much science. Any current students take it and have an opinion - it is with Brady.

I got Reacting to the past 03 with D. Gardner .
If anyone has taken/knows someone who has taken this FYS, I would love to hear about it. Thanks.

NHG, you just won the lottery. Do you know which scenarios will be covered? (Each re-enacting the past does three [or is it four?] scenarios but it’s a mix-and-match kind of thing.) DG, by my D’s account, is terrific. I remember she did the Trial of Anne Hutchinson and the Wan-Li Emperor of China (1587, a year of nothing of significance). I think she may have also done the Trial of Socrates but it may have been the French Revolution.
You’ll get more than enough work but also have a lot of fun.

I was just going to post what TD just wrote. DG is one of the best professors on campus, and you’ll get so much from the class.

Reenacting is lots of work and lots of fun, but the people who’ve taken it become super close with their classmates. One of my friends got so into her game that she actually responded to “Sir Thomas More” in real life.

@ TheDad and Smithiegr: thanks for your feedback. I am so excited about the class.
I have not known which scenarios will be covered yet. But I will contact D. Gardner to ask about this and the reading list as well.
Is it true that there are no exams?

From what I’ve heard, Reenacting the Past is the most well-known class on campus. Everyone wants to get into it, and few do.

I’ve signed up for Literature and Medicine. Has anyone taken that or have any suggestions for it?

NHG, I think that might be true, but no exams doesn’t mean less work. ;)

What SmithieGR said: D worked a lot in that class.

Ok, thanks.
(:

Does anyone know about Ambition and Adultery: Individualism in 19th Century Literature with Michael Gorra? I have not yet found anyone who has taken this class, and I’m curious as to whether it’s worth keeping or if I ought to use the slot for something else.

NHG, why the :frowning: ?

If you’re going to get the most out of attending Smith, a lot of work goes with the territory. The Reenacting History class served as a good intro to the pace of work and quality of writing desired, its intrinsic merits aside.

TheDad, that still looks like a smile (though “backwards” - flip it counterclockwise 90 degrees). (:

Borgin, thanks.
TheDad, (: is actually a smile.
Reacting to the past 03 is my first choice and I am very happy to get into it. I really dont mind “a lot of work” because I want to push myself a little.
Sorry for the confusion.
(:
or :)

Oh. Never mind. I read it as the “unhappy” face, not the 180 from the usual smiley. Duh.

Hey guys…I’m posting here because you seem all-knowing about Smith so HELP ME OUT!
After pouring over a plethora of reviews regarding Smith, I am left apprehensive. The concensus seems to be that the food is gross, the campus has too many rules regarding partying, and the houses are unkempt. I know these things seem trivial, and really shouldn’t be the make or break, but when you go to a college, your paying for the entire experience and I don’t want it to be the same as my life now. Also, how vibrant is Northampton, exactly? What kinds of things do they have? And how easy is it to hop on the PVTA? How are the library hours and dining hours? I heard there also quite restricting…

inconspicuous I think if your general impression of Smith is so negative it would make sense to look at other schools - there are many other choices women’s colleges included and I think first impressions are a reasonable was to narrow down the options -my D had no interest in looking at Wellesley since her general impression was that it was not a fit for her and we were more than happy to knock one of the list. If you have visited Smith and loved it but are concerned about what you are reading I’d think about the sources of the reviews. As my D pointed out many of them are not even by actual students.

No no no! I’m not feeling negative about Smith! I’m just a prospie who wants answers. These are all things I’ve hearddown the grapevine and I think, since I’m applying, it’s in my best interest to know what my parents and I will be paying for. Since I’ve been on CC, I’ve resolved the house issue. Apparently, the houses are nationally ranked so that’s nice to hear. I live with a Brown undergrad and she seems so happy about her school, that I want to be just as happy with my future school as well…

I’m forced to stay in the house and have far too much time on my hands, so earlier today I read your past posts. I realize you’re simply looking for answers but do you understand how easily one could take your posts adversely, or think you might have an agenda?

When you enter a cyber home looking for a favor, bring flowers  TheDad, Borgin, et al. can be a wealth of information, if you play nice nice.

Considering MHC is on your list of possible colleges, why didn’t you post bomb that thread too? ;)
