How to Communicate Adversity?

Ok, so I've heard a lot of talk about how some students with difficult circumstances should give insights on their low GPA's and such, but whenever I see someone writing an essay about their troubles or trying to communicate it in some way, people say it's a "typical, exaggerated adversity essay"

My question is,

How do I show the admissions team that I had a difficult situation without coming off as fake, desperate, exaggerated, etc. ?

This thread may help: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-essays/1375753-hardships-essay.html

Skip the OP’s personal situation and go straight to the advice on how to handle hardship in your application process. There are other threads on this topic as well if you search around.
