How to convince my parents to let me go OOS?

Hi! I really don't want to go to school in state for college, because everyone in my high school does that, and I really want to go somewhere where I'll be forced to have a new group of friends, and not feel obligated to keep my current friend group. I don't WANT to go to school instate anyway. I'd rather see a different part of the country. However, I'm an only child, and my parents say they don't want be being too far away, but the distance to this out of state school is the same distance as an instate school, so it doesn't make sense to me at all. Cost isn't an issue at all, it's just the fact that they're not comfortable with their only daughter not being in the house. I'm out of things to say to try and convince them to let me go out of state. I need heeeeelp!

Just because people from your high school go to a local school doesn’t mean you will see them all the time, especially if it is a big state U. Local schools are as far away as you want to make them… I went to school 45 minutes from home, and only saw my parents a few times during the year. You don’t have to room with your school friends, nor hang out with them if you don’t want to. Are you sure cost isn’t an issue? Just because your parents COULD pay doesn’t mean they want to spend that kind of money, especially if you have strong in-state options like you would in California, Michigan, Virginia, etc.

The matter of friends shouldn’t be the only deciding factor in the college you go to. Think bigger than friends. Will going out of state really be better? The education you are looking for might be better at an in state college or maybe out of state one.

If you want to be in a completely different place than you are now (like moving east coast to west coast), where you will in a completely new environment, tell your parents so. Let them know you want to experience a different part of America.

I made a thread here on why it would be a good idea to go out of state for my situation:
<a href=“Why go to an out of state college? - College Search & Selection - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1668195-why-go-to-an-out-of-state-college.html</a></p>

I have made up my mind to stay in state.

Friends is the only deciding factor, it’s just one that I used. All the things I want in a college are at this school, and aren’t at the schools in state.

They are paying, they get to decide. That is the bottom line… it would help if you would give more info on what state you are in, your proposed major, and what the OOS schools are that you would like to attend.

You have a specific college you really want to go to?

Actually, my dad’s GI bill is paying. That’s why cost isn’t an issue.

I live in North Carolina, which has good schools like UNC, and my gpa is definitely not a 4.4, so I don’t have much of a chance of getting in. I want to go to the University of Kentucky. I’ve been a UK basketball fan my entire life, and I have the grades to get in. It’s where I want to go.

Get a big scholarship and they will be convinced. Also, tell them what the advantage is for going OOS schools (specifically; and in terms of academics). If you are going to avoid your school’s people like the plague, then give a good reason besides that and basketball, why going to UK is a better idea than UNC or NC state

I’ve told them that I want to go there because of class sizes. I thrive in smaller learning environments, and the average class size as UK is 25, and I’ve had friends come back from in state schools talking about the majority of their classes are 300-400 kids. That’s not something I could deal with. I also constantly bring up how a lot of people they know that are in high positions in their respective fields went to UK, but it’s like they’re not listening.

I am not positive but I believe that UK is also a state flagship. The classes at UK will also be 100+ freshman year

I WANT to go to this school. I’ve asked for help to convince my parents to let me go OOS. Not a bunch of other parents telling me why I should stay in state. I know the reasons to stay instate. I don’t WANT to stay in state.

You are talking about friends taking giant classes in in-state schools. UK is an in-state school for people from Kentucky. Most colleges have those big classes especially schools like UK’s size of 28,928 students enrolled in 2012.

You don’t have to take all giant classes those are generally only intro classes.

IMHO, do not go to UK because of the basketball team, UK has one of the most overrated teams in the nation. We all know that the players get payed to come.

---------THIS POST IS AS A JOKE DO NOT TAKE SERIOUSLY--------

That’s probably the funniest thing I’ve heard all day lol

To be 100% honest, if I had the grades to go to Duke, this post wouldn’t even exist. Duke is amazing.

Same, but my grades are a joke to get into Duke

Your friends are coming back from 300-400 classes because all freshmen classes are that large at state schools. That’s how large they will be at UK, too. You’re not comparing the same thing. 7% of classes at UNC CH are 100+ students, 6% at UK, and 8% at NC State (according to CollegeData). You need better reasons than assuming classes are smaller, being a basketball fan, not wanting to see the same people (which will happen so rarely at big colleges), and hearsay about prestige.

Your parents already know you “WANT to go to this school” and evidently it hasn’t been enough. If even you can’t think of compelling reasons, how is anyone else supposed to do it for you?

I thought that UNC accepted 80% of its students from instate so maybe your chances are better than you think.
University of Kentucky gives some good scholarships depending on stats.

@mommdc UNC-CH has around 50% in state and like 15% out of state

Literally, I just asked for help. Not other parents having a hissy fit because I want to go out of state. I don’t see the point in yall replying if your posts do nothing but try to give me reasons to stay in state, because that’s not what I asked for at all.

I’d REALLY appreciate it if I could get an actual reason to try and convince my parents. Thanks.

@mommdc I’m definitely going to apply to UNC just to see, and IF I get in I’ll go, but if I don’t get in, my next best choice would be UK.
