how to decide where to apply

im from nys, and from what i hear most people only get into 1 or 2 med schools, if that. is it smart to apply to every medical school within your state (i know there are a lot in nys) to incease your chances? is it common to apply to 20 + schools?

It's not about how many schools you apply to, but rather which schools. State schools are generally a must. This doesn't mean you should necessarily apply to every school in your state. If you have a 3.4 and a 30, don't waste your money on Cornell or Columbia. Apply to a few reach schools if you want, but everyone needs to apply to match schools (ie schools with average GPA and MCAT scores slightly below yours). 15 is a good number if you apply intelligently. 20+ if you're from CA.
