How to Decline an Acceptance With Grace

I have a few questions about the appropriate method for thanking schools that accepted your child and then declining their offer of acceptance.

Does the child write the email? I feel a bit oldschoolish about this but my gut says that a parent ought to be the one to write the note. The parents, after all, in many cases are making the final financial determination. What is customary? Does authorship in this case even matter?

How does an applicant exit with grace? In other words, has anyone written a template for this note, and would be open to sharing it?

In the note, is it expected that the applicant/parent tell the AO at the declined school where the child will be attending? Again, my gut says that this feels iffy...

See the following thread in the parents section:

Thanks for the link, neato. I had the feeling that this topic had been covered!
