How to decline offer of admission?

Hey there!

Due to the fact that the University of Michigan is wanting me to pay $42,000 a year to attend, I will instead be spending my undergraduate years at Ohio State. How do I officially notify UMich of my decision and decline their offer?

If you cannot even figure out how to decline an offer, you don’t belong at UM at all.

That seems a bit harsh. By all means, attack a stranger on the internet, I hope it makes you feel better.

I honestly haven’t looked into yet, I just wanted a quick answer rather than tracking it down myself. Also, if I was accepted EA, then I do belong there.

Jackass.

You need to go into wolverine access → new & prospective students → application status → decline.

Thanks for being considerate about your decision to decline in a timely manner. Your space will now be open for another student. I’m sorry Michigan was too expensive for you to attend. Best of luck at Ohio. :-)

ZacharyCort, You knew very well you needed to pay OOS tuition when you applied to UM. Then you complained about it when you were admitted. You are not qualified for a decent merit-based scholarship, are you?

Wavelet, really?? You’re going to give him a hard time for asking a simple question on a forum designed to ask questions? Plenty of people make decisions to go elsewhere for financial reasons and that’s no need to call him a jackass.

Furthermore, he was just trying to open up a spot so someone else could enjoy the university next fall. Why don’t we all just try to be a little more helpful around here and a bit less childish…

Hi EricJPrice, I have no problem with what you said. I didn’t think he was asking a real question as if he really didn’t know how to decline an offer. I just think you should not complain about the tuition if you knew ahead of time how much it would be. It would be great if he would actually decline the offer. Then some of my friends might get a chance to attend UM :)

I agree name calling is pretty petty. However, this seems like a petty thread. Anyone who’s been admitted and has viewed their Wolverine Access page sees the big Respond Now button that gives Accept and Decline options. Even if he hasn’t viewed his WA page, common sense says that sending the admissions office a quick email will do. In addition, Michigan makes it very clear that they do not meet OOS need and most OOS people know that they shouldn’t expect much aid. The post did come off as very ‘matter of fact’ and whiny-like about having to pay the high price tag for OOS. The OSU part doesn’t help either haha

I see no harm in his question and don’t understand all the nasty responses. Some oos do receive aid so obviously he wanted and needed to see his package before he could decide to attend or not. I think his preference was to attend umich but finances are standing in his way.

Not suggesting that you do this (because it may hold up other students who are waiting), but if you 'do nothing, eventually Michigan will figure out that you’re not coming.

I commend Zach for having the decency to inform the university of his mature decision. His thoughtful action will provide another worthy student the chance of attending Michigan.

All the best to Zachary.

I will bleed the maize and blue of Michigan until I die, but I despise all the elitist bastards we have, as evidenced by the replies to this post. Go to hell.

^^^You comment is also an overreaction enlightenedespot. I see one or two posters in this thread who made a derrogatory remark to the OP.

How is it an overreaction? I love most people here and wouldn’t go anywhere else, but I still hate all the elitist sentiment nonetheless.
