I was admitted to a master's program to NYU but I am not able to attend the program yet and I would like to defer my admission. However, I have no idea how it should be done by the book. I think I am supposed to make a written request etc, but what am I supposed to do with the "candidate reply form"? It only has possibilites for denying or accepting the place, and says nothing about deferring. I have heard about cases where deferment was accepted, but the university didn't no anything about it next year, when one was supposed to start in the program. So obviously it is very important to do everything very carefully and by the book. Probably this may sound very stupid for you, but I am an international student and I don't know too much about how things are supposed to be done in US. So please help me...

I know people can defer PhD admissions for up to 1-2 years, but I have no idea if people can defer master's programs (I know it sucks). Hopefully someone will answer.

From what I know, many schools allow for deferred enrollment within 12-18 months for master's programs as well. I don't think it would hurt to call or e-mail the admissions office or graduate office and ask for the best way to go about handling your situation effectively and appropriately. Or, if you've been in contact with a particular faculty member within the program/department, you could ask them your question (and if nothing else, they could direct you to the right person). At least asking shows initiative and that you're being considerate to let the department know your status as soon as possible. Just some ideas, good luck.

Okay, I have been looking around. Deferrals at the top schools are very rare. Also, if you defer your admission, you will jeopardize your financial aid (!). So my advice is to apply when you are ready to go to school.

I have already contacted both the department and the faculty and from the department I was told that I can defer, but nothing else. The faculty hasn't answered at all. The problem is how the request is supposed to be done correctly. The most important reason for requesting the deferment is financing problems. I have no possibility to finance the tuition and other costs at this moment, but if I could defer my admission I could apply for several external funds.
