Okay, so I'm not old for what I'm doing (but I fear that I may become that sometime), but it's something that I'm going to have to do more and more these days. Is an "I'm not comfortable disclosing it" okay? I used to deflect such questions such as "years with reference to what? the orbit of mars around the sun? the sun+earth around the galactic center?" responses but now I don't do that anymore.

Well it’s kind of hard to help you if you’re not comfortable to disclose what you’re doing. If it’s something where they need to know your age (buying alcohol comes to mind), there’s not much you can do about it. If it’s something where they’re asking you inappropriately, then skirt the question or say you’re not comfortable telling them, for whatever reason.

I can’t get much more specific than that without knowing your situation.

If you’re talking about job interviews it is actually illegal for them to ask you your age. It’s also illegal for them to ask you: anything about religion, anything about active duty in the national guard, about disabilities or illnesses, if you have kids or plan on it, if you’re married, where you were born (including country, exception for jobs that require clearance I think) or what someone’s native language is. There are other things too, but those are the biggies. If you’re talking about people in general get over it.

i’m sure he’s a special operations agent with the NSA, that’s why he can’t disclose it

Wait, are you talking about picking up girls at bars?

You should just keep doing that whole “years in reference to what” thing, people won’t talk to you if you do that

How hard is it to just say one number? You have a problem if you’re that insecure about your age.

I’m pretty sure he’s a 30 year old trying to pick up girls at a college bar.

Based on [this thread](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/923691-i-need-girlfriend.html) where you repeatedly threatened to kill yourself and other crazy things, I think you have bigger problems to deal with. I’m sorry if it sounds rude, but please consider seeing a counselor or specialist.

Anyway, if you are 25 and under it won’t be a big deal if you’re a little older than everyone else. Lots of people don’t follow the traditional path of college at 18 after HS - I have met older students in their twenties who are going to college for the first time.

“I’m pretty sure he’s a 30 year old trying to pick up girls at a college bar.”

If thats the case, make sure you know your states laws on Statutory rape.

hope that helped

The deflect tactic you’re currently using is kinda hostile and would probably turn people off to a conversation. Just “old enough!” should be sufficient, with a smile.

Although based on past threads I’m wondering about what exactly it is you’re up to.

Kinda pervy that I know this…but since almost all college bars are 18+, then it’s assumed that everyone at the bar is above the age of consent, therefore if he has sex with a girl that is a minor, he won’t get charged because he can just say that he was under the impression that by the girl being able to get into the bar, she was 18 or older. I’m not sure why I know this.

Are you really sure you are not responsible for finding out whether or not a sexual partner is a minor? I am not buying this. What you’re saying would make sense, but laws usually dont. :P

In my SUNY days, it was extremely normal to have students 40+ in class with a bunch of 18 - 25 year olds.
Nobody thought twice about it. Although the 40+ year-old students tended to be on the slow side and always needed additional help or explanation from the professor…which got annoying quickly.

The above isn’t so frequent at Columbia though, unless some of the GS students attend the regular classes.
Anyway, if you’re worried about being older(? I’m just guessing since you didn’t provide much background), don’t worry about it. You’re not alone.

And if you’re worried about disclosing your age for sake of being weird…then, you’ll only draw more attention to it if you react oddly or go out of your way to hide your age. It’s not something most people will think twice about unless you’re drawing attention to it–which it sounds like you’re doing.

Just lie.

10char

“Are you really sure you are not responsible for finding out whether or not a sexual partner is a minor?”

Legally, yes you are, I think almost everywhere. Practically, that depends.

Take your age, subtract 3.7, append a “g” “h” or “i” to the end of that, new word, append an “alpha” and then the date in format “M.MY-1Y-2DDY-3Y-4” and then your favorite color, then your favorite animal.

For instance, if you were 20, today’s date is May 28th 2010, your favorite color was purple, and your favorite animal was a cheetah, you would say…

“I’m 16.3-H alpha 0.5202810 purple tiger.”

I forgot, you must always lie about one of those things, or else someone might figure the algorithm out.

Your point?

Isn’t the age of sexual consent in most states 16 or 17? Pretty much every college student is going to be at least that age or older.

“Your point?”

That was to the OP. He was asking how to deflect the question. I gave him an algorithm to form an answer that will probably deflect the question. I bet they won’t ask again.

Emaheevul07’s point that just because someone appears to be a college student, doesn’t mean they’re college age. Someone could say they’re in college without actually being in college.

AOC varied by state, so make sure you know yours. In some states it’s 18 for everybody, in some it’s 18 with close age exceptions, etc. And yes, it’s your job to ‘check’ if in doubt, although I think if you meet someone somewhere that people under 18 aren’t supposed to be anyway (aka a bar) you should be in the clear. Legally you aren’t though.
