How to determine SAT score

I suspect I just add Math and Reading score and leave out Writing. Or, do I add all 3 and divide by 3? ACT is more common in my part of the world. Please advise.

just take the total of all three.
unless specific schools only looks at math and reading, in which case just add up those 2.

Are you sure, Zephyravatar? If this is so, her score maybe isn’t so bad. 650 for Reading, 640 for Math, and a 570 in writing. She should report that her SAT score is an 1860?

I forgot to ask, is it worth taking it a second time?

I’d say a 1290 is better than an 1860.
If you can get away with just reporting the CR+Math, I would do that. Some schools don’t even take Writing into account.

It can be helpful to take it a second time. I did and improved by 100 points.

I’d take it again. Scores have a tendency to improve if taken a second and sometimes, a third. I’d do practice tests to study.

Yup, definitely worth taking it a second time, lots of room for improvement.

In general you write down all of the scores (eg. CA) and each school decides which parts they want to consider.

There is definitely room for improvement, check out a summary of xiggi’s method:

Yes, usually an application form that asks at all asks for scores from each section, with dates that the test was taken.

In the case you mention, a retake would be a good idea.
