Ok, we all know that the problem with using the stopwatch on your digital watch is that annoying beeping sound which hinders its use in testing rooms. There’s a simple trick I do which works perfectly for me and should work on most digital watches.

Open the back cover of your watch (either unscrew the screws or place a very thing screwdriver in between the watch and cover to pop it out)

Look on the underside of the cover. There should be a yellow/white sticker like thing. There also will be a spring that sticks out of the inside of the watch. It’s this spring, when made contact with the battery cover sticker, makes that noise.

Test the watch with the battery cover off, if there is no more sound, than you have sucessfully disconnected the noise switch (by removing the cover)

You now have two options. Either 1. Totally remove the sticker from the battery cover or 2. Place a piece of tape on top of the sticker making sure it is 100% covered.

Put back the cover on and it should be 100% noise free! Enjoy!

Yes, by rotating the plate the spring which is supposed to connect the circuit on the back did not do so because you switched it around. Of course, some watches may have that sticker on the back cover which takes up the whole cover and so you'll need to cover those or remove them.

Well, I wanted to try and disable it for the test. So I tried opening my first cheap watch and looked for some sort of speaker. I couldn't really find a speaker haha. I tried to press the buttons and I couldn't hear the sound anymore.

So I noticed there's this weird sticker on the back cover and a spring which it touches in the watch. And then I realized other watches have the same thing.

And what do you know? The sound was disabled when I got it off/covered! :D

Nice, thanks for the info. I disabled the sound by uncovering the back of the watch and placing scotch tape on top of the lithium (silver coating).

Thanks - this was really fast and helpful - and we all know that a watch can be the difference between a 700 and an 750 or a 33 and a 36 sometimes. =]

Thanks so much! I did the same thing as knifey; I put scotch tape over the sticker and my watch is now 100% silent. I was just about to order a separate silent timer until I came across this post. This will be very useful for both AP exams and SAT/ACT tests in the near-future.
