out of all the people who get an 800 on the math, only 12% receive the same score. my mom's friend is an adcom told me this, getting two 800 maths puts you at 128 out of million statistically--kind of impressive for everyone trying to distinguish yourself from other 800 maths.

sorry, could you explain it more deeply? I am quite confused. you mean get both math1c and math2c with 800 is very very impressive? or math in SAT1 reasoning test 800 plus math2c in SAT2 test? Or anything else

my fault, getting an 800 on SAT I math twice.

I C, thanks very much!

assuming 20% of kids go to college (which is actually high i think) and .7% of kids get an 800, and 12 percent of those get another...that puts you at
.2.007.12 = 168 out of a million roughly is the 99.9832nd percentile.

hrmmm it really does not affect your chances though, does it?

depends what field/major you want

Ah yes. Distinguish yourself in your ability to do a useless task by showing that you can do it TWICE. Fantastic.

Better idea: take the AMC 12. There's plenty of room to be "distinguished" there, if you so desire it.

what is the AMC-12? I just read a thread for people who were unsatisfied with the fact that other people with less math ability than themselves got the same score, and I couldn't find the thread. feuler--do u know if being a member to a high IQ society can help in getting accepted?

It's a national math contest designed for students who have had algebra II or above. It is also the entry point into a series of more difficult contest, which eventually culminate in the selection of six students to represent the U.S. at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

The benefit of the AMC 12 (and subsequent contests) is that it is focused on problem-solving with basic mathematical concepts, not just recalling esoteric rules and applying them in mundane ways. This also makes it much harder than, say, the SAT.

More info is at http://www.unl.edu/amc.

As for high IQ societies, I have no idea. I would guess that it would depend on how selective they are, and what all you do as a member. I'm really not the person to ask about what looks good on apps, though.

dwintz,
my guess is that no matter how many times you get an 800 on your math SAT or any other test, the assistant or secretary only has one line on the form to transcribe this information-- I doubt the ADcom at most schools performs this task, they look at the summary created by someone else. furthermore, while an 800 is desirable/laudable it is neither necessary nor sufficient. time is better spent on other things...

very cool accomplishment but I think that you could only put into an essay because it requires alot of explanation. Maybe if you asked a teacher to put it into a rec for you because an essay on math would be pretty sad.
