How to do better in English?

So, last quarter, I received straight A+'s except for English, in which I got an A- (highest grades in the grades were A-'s, lol). I know some may find it ridiculous that I'm angry over an A-. I just want to know how to get an A or maybe even an A+.

The thing is, I do really well on participation, I show great effort on homework, but there is just one thing that kills me: the writing, especially essays on tests and analyses. I can write fairly well but apparently I never write well enough to fully meet his expections. Every thime I write something, he'll write "Why?". Then, when on the next assignment I make sure to write why, he writes "Why?". I don't understand what more I can do. And in a few days, we have the first paper for the second quarter due and I want to start freshly?

Any tips on how I can excel to meet my teacher's writing expectaions?

“Why” means that you need to explain, and show not tell. Use quotes usually. Try better integrating your quotes.

thanks for the advice

Yeah, I’ve found that “Why” generally means “go to the text and find quoted examples supporting this statement, then analyze these quotes and show me exactly how they connect to your point.” It also means: don’t use vague, sweeping statements.
