I'm a high school student, and I was wondering if you needed connections or something to do research for a professor. Also, do you need to be extremely good at science? For those of you who did research, did you just e-mail random professors at a college?

I was wondering about that too

yeah I just emailed a bunch of professors at UCF whos research I had read about and was interested in. In the email I talked about specific parts of their research that I thought would be interesting to expand on and asked them if they would guide me. You get a lot of guys saying that their lab is full, but finally someone took me in. So far its been a really great experience
As far as being "extremely good at science"... not neccessarily.
Getting 5's in AP science courses probably helped because they want kids who are going to be dedicated and not constantly need help. Also understanding the concepts is super important for research because there is a lot of critical thinking involved esp when you run into problems
