I currently score in the ~400 range in the SAT writing and the essay I usually get a 4 or 5. What are your suggestions on reaching for the 800?

Thanks :)

It’s impossible to make concrete suggestions without knowing what’s holding you back.

Could you post a writing sample?

Oh. Well for now can you help me with MC? I think I’m fine for the essay
Thank you for replying

Hmmm…

That’s still kinda vague. Let me think on this one and get back to you sometime tomorrow.

well I went from a 620 with a 10 essay to an 800 (wih perfect multiple choice) and a 12 essay with 3 weeks of studying. All I can say to help you is to practice practice and practice some more. In my 3 weeks I went through all 10 practice tests in the bluebook. And after you go through a test, review not only the questions you got wrong, but every single question in the section to really see the patterns in the questions, so that you can get more right every time.

As for the essay, if you’re not consistently scoring a 12, you have room for improvement. If you score an 11 or 12 on the essay, you can usually get 1 or 2 questions of the MC wrong and still get an 800. I wrote a thread on how to score a 12 on the essay the easiest way. Check it out.http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/1525053-defeating-sat-essay-2-days.html

Thanks jkjeremy and satman1111,

@Jkjeremy more on the MC, for a practice test I took with Kaplan, I got 18 right, 21 wrong, and 10 omitted. -_- its really bad… but the score did not change after 2 tests I took with Kaplan. I hope its more specific.

@satman1111 Is it possible to study using PR and Barron’s? I don’t have the blue book. Thanks for the tips and defeating the SAT essay thread its probably better than what I’ve learned with Kaplan so far…

Thanks again!!

Just taking more practice tests isn’t the answer. You need to learn how grammar works.

Without knowing anything else, I’d suggest that you start by spending some time on the following:

—parallelism
—misplaced modifiers
—agreement (all types)

What you’re asking isn’t all that different from, “How do I get better at math?”

Therefore, aside from what I’ve mentioned above, it would be a good idea to get a good grammar book and work the exercises from cover to cover.

The guides on CC along with a lot of practice got me to where I wanted.

@jkjeremy What grammar books do you recommend?

Thanks, jkjeremy and gaialover!

What grammar books do you recommend?

Don’t use any book that promises to make it easy or fun.

(Don’t buy Grammar for Dummies if there is such a thing.)

It’s definitely possible. Grammar sections have patterns, and I got from 450 to a 690. I know 690 is not good enough but eventually I got only 3 wrongs on Grammar with a 9 essay. Now what’s holding me back are almost all idiom Qs which are harder for me since English is not my first language.

@jkjeremy Thanks! Btw, they do have English Grammar for Dummies! xD

@jenniferlien Really? Thanks. I can relate to you. English wasn’t really my first language either. I guess I’ll have to try really hard to get an 800 on Writing.
