How to email for an internship

What is the proper method for emailing a company asking for summer internship positions (assuming they don't have it listed on their website)? The companies I'm targeting are mostly banks and consulting firms. If an email for careers is provided, do I email that person, or do I try to email the CEO or someone important? Should I attach my resume right away (and is a cover letter necessary) and what should I write in the email? Should I write the email like a shortened cover letter?

(I did a google search on this and found some threads on collegeconfidential already, but more opinion is always nice to have, so any comments are appreciated)

does anyone have any tips?

The CEO probably doesn’t have time to respond to internship applicants. I would email HR or any general contact address. I personally wouldn’t attach a resume at the onset as it might seem aggressive.

As far as the email, it can and should be pretty simple:

Hello,

I am majoring in Consulting at Indiana University, Bloomington. I wanted to inquire as to if McKinsey & Company offered any summer internship opportunities for college undergraduates interested in the consulting field. Is there anyone to whom I can send a resume for consideration?

Thank you for your time,
John Smith
