Hi,I am a new user and from Burma.I juz want to know how to fill out the extracurricular section of common app correctly.
First there is a list to fill out.Right?
What kind of activities are eligible for that list? Can I fill in sth I did two years ago?I mean sth I don't do regularly.Sth like a project.Another question is on the brief-explanation part. What kind of activities suit that part most?Long time activity or a short time project? And how should I write when I fill that part?Do I need to be completely objective?Do I need to write what I learn from it?That part confuses me a little bit.U know.
Thanks in advance.
PS.Do we need to prove our extracurricular activities?(recommendation letters, photos, elaboration)

On the common application there is a section where you list the activities you do. Put down the activities you did in high school that are extracurricular–outside of your academic study. These can be long-term or short-term activities. Briefly explain what it is that you did in that project or club or other activity. You do not need to prove that you did your extracurricular activities.

Well I would definitely elaborate on an activity, especially if it interests you or you spent a lot of time on it. Also I might get an extra ecommendation (as a supplement) from someone who supervised the club or was an older college that worked with you. The people you worked with can really bring out a new perspective and highlight the activity you were a part of

Ok, i see.But I think only one activity is allowed to be elborated. What if I want to elborate other activities “briefly”?

And,should i attach another page for brief explanation of the activities other than the one which is already elaborated in the space “Briefly explain one of your extracurricular activities…”?
And when I elaborate my activity in that space, how should I write?Just what I did?Or include what I learn from it?Or in an essay style?

You create a chart that you can attach (or upload electronically). In the chart state you can repeat the 1) name of activity 2) description and any leadership roles you had in that activity 3) any awards you got from that activity 4) hours/week weeks/year and what years you did it in. Might be repetitive but you never know if the admission officer will ever have both your application and the uploaded document and reading them side by side. ALSO ANY DOCUMENTS YOU UPLOAD, INCLUDE YOUR NAME ON!!!

If you wrote “youth group” as an activity and wrote "I was president and helped organize these ( ) events in an effort to ( ) " on the APPLICATION but on the on the attached document, elaborate on the events, how much money you raised and what you did. DO NOT WRITE IT LIKE AN ESSAY! Or what you learned. You can write “The leadership role I achieved as president demonstrated itseld when i helped organize a town-wide car wash/bake sale that raised x dollars.” But, rather be straight to the point and put the bare facts out there and very SUBTLY VERY SUBTLY, if nothing at all, include what you learned.

So yes, you can repeat events just elaborate on them more. Don’t be afraid of being repetitive. you never know if someone is reading your uploaded document SEPARATELY form your application…you never know.

Thanks so much. But another thing. Most of the extracurricular activities I did were in the form of science projects you know.Like making a skateboard, skimboard or composite bow.Do you think I should briefly explain about them? The procedure?

^ Those aren’t science projects. Science projects have questions, hypothesis, procedures, and then the question may be answered or a conclusion is reached. You building a composite bow (and wow, congrats!) is more in the aspect of design. State something along the lines of, “Designed and Built Various Structures” and describe what you built and how long it took you to build it. In a 10 word sentence or less, describe what a composite bow is ( a weapon used to throw projectiles, im not too sure what is is, im guessing). If it is something youre really interested in and want to elaborate on state, briefly how 1) you got the materials for the things and 2) what did you do with the structures after you built them (whether it be entered a contest or used them for your own benefit). You can state what shape it is in or the steps on how you built it but it is not necessary to get into detail. If you mention how you built it, it should be in no more than 2-3 sentences that have a max of 15 words in them. I assume the admission officers want to know how sophisticated or not the design of these structures are to get a sense of how developed your design skills are rather than you giving such a detailed procedure, that it is a tutorial.

what if i was in an activity that i’ve been for all four years, but in my last year, i became president? how do i write that out formally?
