How to Find an Apartment

I'm an upperclassman at a university in a large city, and I'm looking for an apartment for next year. I want to share it with others for financial reasons, but I don't know really where to look. Are there ads in the apartments themselves or in newspapers? I tried facebook marketplace, but so far no luck. There are about 6 or so apartments within walking distance of my university, and I don't have a car so I'm just looking at these ones. Any suggestions to help with this process? Also - what is a waiting list? Should I worry about finding an apartment/roommates now because of the wait or should I wait a few months before the fall semester?

Thanks.

ever hear of craigslist.org? It's online classified ads. You can search there for apartment openings, other people looking for a place to live, people looking for roommates, etc..

Since you know the specific apartment complexes you are interested in, you should go to the management offices of these complexes & see if they have openings. But due to the proximity to campus, you will most likely have to be put on a waiting list. A waiting list is just like it sounds - your name is put on a list and as apartments become available then those at the top of the list get those apartments, and people move up the list till they are on the top.

A few places I looked at also removed people from the list if they did not keep regular contact (every few weeks) to express continuing interest in living there. Keep that in mind.

When you visit the different places, ask how long the waiting list is and about how long they anticipate it would be for you to get an apartment. You should start your hunt early... every location is different so we have no way of knowing how long the wait is, the only way to find out is to ask the apartment complex managers.

You could also try going onto the website for your local paper (or buy a physical copy of one) or news stations and check if they have apartment listings. I know all of the media outlets in Pittsburgh had listings of some sort, so I'm sure if you're in a "large city" they should have them too.

And start your search ASAP. The best apartments (not as in nicest, but also best deals) tend to go early in the year. If you wait until a week before school starts you're going to get screwed.
