I am currently attending my last semester taking online classes at Lake Superior College from Duluth MN; studying for Information Technology: Network Administration Applied Science degree. I would say that I am an ok student with GPA of 3.7. Now lets get to the point. I live in New York City and I am trying to do my internship this semester. I tried several different websites to find internship for my degree, maybe I am looking at the wrong places, but for IT there are not many offers. The positions that I apply for, I never hear back anything from them. The websites that I was checking out were www.internships.com, www.internmatch.com, www.internshipprograms.com.
If anyone is assuming that I am doing something wrong here or have an idea where to look , what to do please respond on my discussion.
I would not use the third party sites to find internships. Instead, use LinkedIn for a wide net, or figure out a list of companies with headquarters in NY and then visit each site individually. If they offer internships and look for students outside of on campus recruiting, you would be able to find them in the careers section.
Smaller companies are more likely to take on an intern from a non-target school since they are less likely to have a network of recruiters going out to places far and wide, which presents a challenge since you need to know these companies exist.
If you are still having trouble finding companies in a few weeks, change your strategy. You don’t NEED an internship to get a full time job, so it would behoove you to start searching for full time, entry level positions. To that point, even if you do find an internship, you should be looking for full time work ASAP; if you wait until you graduate to look, you will have waited too long. Tech is an industry that recruits all year and doesn’t expect people to start right away, so you don’t need to worry about a sticky situation with getting an offer and not being able to accept!
