How to find match schools and safety schools???? URGENT

Hi guys. I am a junior in New England. current gpa is 3.87. havent taken SAT yet
Im taking 1 ap class at school and learning 3 on my own. Will take 2 or 3 next year. (Cuz I am a transfered junior)
have personal business. intern. international community service. lions club member. student government. student company. several clubs (not president nor other positions) no sports (if you think track is a sport). no music. only photography. (so it's average or below average EC)

How can I find match schools and safety schools??? When I search for safety schools, I just go through the list and look for those with average gpa 3.3 to 3.5. Is that a good way to do so?
But how can I find match schools?? I have to go on college visits in march very soon. I want to figure out a list with match schools and safety schools to visit.

Thank you so much!!!

Identifying match and safety schools depends on other factors, including test scores, budget, and class rank as well as GPA. A safety is a school that is virtually certain to admit you with enough financial aid to make it affordable. It also should be a school you’d be happy to attend. A match is a school that is likely (not certain) to admit you with enough aid to make it affordable. What does “likely” mean? That depends in part on your risk tolerance.

With a 3.87 average in core academic subjects, for many states the in-state public flagship would be a safety or match school if your SAT M+CR is well above1200, and if you can afford the costs predicted by its Net Price Calculators. Many national LACs and universities in the US News 21-50 range or so would be match schools, if your SAT M+CR is ~1400 or above, if you rank in your school’s top 10%, and if you can afford the costs predicted by their Net Price Calculators. Universities and LACs in the top 20 lists are reaches for most applicants, even with high test scores and good ECs.

Hi @tk21769 thank you so much

I will not apply for any scholarship or financial aid.
And I am looking for a way to target down match schools effectively.
do you have any suggestions???

You certainly are a candidate for merit aid at many colleges even if your parents are 1%ers. And you may be eligible for FA. Is yours an ideological position or is it a matter of your family’s wealth? I ask because I want to know for sure that we don’t have to consider any kind of school money in suggesting schools. You’re absolutely certain that you are full-pay no matter where you apply?

Are your parents saying that they’ll pay $55k+ for any school? if so, then super.

If you’re not sure that they’ll pay that much, please ask them. And ask them if that also applies to safety schools (some parents will pay X for the “best schools”, but they won’t pay that much for safeties. Or, often parents don’t realize how much colleges cost these days. They might think that $30k per year would cover any school.

Just get clear info from them. Every year there are kids who post here and say, “I didn’t apply for aid, but now I’ve found out that I need aid,” so just get the needed info from your parents.

" When I search for safety schools, I just go through the list and look for those with average gpa 3.3 to 3.5. Is that a good way to do so?"

A safety must be:

 1. a school that you like and would attend
 2. a school that your know FOR SURE that you have all costs covered.
3. a school that has your major.
 4. a school that will accept you.

@mom2collegekids thank you very much. Im an international student. i wont apply for aid cuz it would lower my chance and im sure my family is fine with that. I may apply for merit scholarship after i attend the school but I will not apply for aid.

And I think northeastern is like a 60% match and 40% safety for me. So I will take it as a reference. What colleges are similar to Northeastern and have very good programs??

Thank you so much!!

You will do a better search if you can identify the subjects of interest and the general geographic location you want to be. Just from your gpa scores it does not give me enough information to advice you, because gpa in one school could be vastly different from another. A high profile very difficult top school could have a gpa of 3.5 and that will equal to a 4.0 student from a middle of the road public. For example, my nephew went to a top school in CA and his gpa was no more than 3.5 but was admitted to UCLA.

thank you so much! @artloversplus (ps. I love art too!)
My school is one of the Independent School League… but not the top ones. probably the middle tier in the League.

“Hi guys. I am a junior in New England. current gpa is 3.87. havent taken SAT yet”

Without scores, I don’t think you can consider NU as a “part safety”…or even a “part match”. Maybe if you already knew that you have a 2280 SAT you might be able to consider it a match or low reach. It can never be anyone’s safety.

Applying for scholarships as an incoming frosh will not hurt your admissions process. And waiting til you’re enrolled is a really bad idea since there are so FEW scholarships for continuing students.

Applying for scholarships is NOT the same as applying for FA.

If you’re already attending a top NE pricey prep school as full-pay, then you probably are certain that your parents will pay for a top univ. I just wanted you to make sure. We have so many kids who post that they won’t need to apply for aid, and then much later learn that they need to. :(

You’ll be a business major? What area? Finance? or what?

For safeties, can you qualify for any of these automatic admissions or scholarships?

@mom2collegekids

thank you so much!! Now Northeastern University’s SAT is already 2280!!!
and I am going to a preppy school in NE with full-pay…

I am going into applied math/statistics/economics

I know that I am not an A+ student with extraordinary scores and impressive EC…
so my strategy is to find schools that I like and also will have a chance to get in
I like those schools that have many opportunities for intern or studying abroad or other things. cuz I want to go to a good grad school so I need to make my resume excellent when i graduate from college.

@ucbaalumnus thank you for the lists. But I will only look at schools in the West or New England or Mid-Atlantic

OP, a lot of discussion has taken place on CC in the last 8 years on applied math programs. I couldn’t find any one of them that I preferred, so I’m suggesting you take a look for yourself.
