How to find out essay topic

OK, this is going to sound like a stupid question, but WHERE do you find out what the essay topic should be? Or do you just write an essay about a personal topic? This is our first college admission experience. My S is interested in applying to Univ. of Florida, FSU, Rutgers, UNC, Columbia, Syracuse, and maybe some others. I know he has to start writing very soon. Thanks for your help.

look on each college’s official web site

Yeah, look on the college website. It’ll tell you if they use the common app and if so, if you need to write any supplements aside from the common app essay.

What’s the “common app” essay?

Your kid writes a single essay for one of the following prompts (strictly between 250 and 650 words inclusive):

https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Docs/DownloadForms/2013/EssayAnnouncementFinal.pdf

And submits it to the schools he’s applying to that accept the Common App.

I know Syracuse and Columbia use the common app, so your son will need to make an account. It goes online on August 1st.
