I am starting my fourth semester at my small liberal arts college - took last spring semester off - and am seriously considering transferring in the spring. This is for several reasons: my current school is small and isolated and doesn't offer a lot of classes that I'm excited about, but mostly I just feel like the social scene doesn't really suit me. I've made close friends, but not many, and I guess I've never really felt like I really "click" very well with the people here as a whole.

So here's my question: how do I go about finding a school to transfer to when the thing that's missing about my current school is the social aspect? That's not something you can find on a list of stats about the school or something, and even talking to students on forums and that sort of thing only gets you so far. I am unhappy at my current school, but I have absolutely no idea how to find a new one that would make me happier.

Thanks for any advice you might have.

Have you considered looking at large schools in urban areas? If you are trying to find a place to fit in, these schools are a good option because they offer a lot of diversity. Once you get there try out a lot of different school clubs and social activities. You may find that ultimately you connect with a different type than you would have expected, so be open minded.

I’m at a small community college. Last semester, my fourth semester, was the first time I felt like I really fit in. I made a lot of new friends and developed meaningful connections with some of my teachers. Sometimes it just takes a little longer to find your place.

Visit schools and interview if at all possible. I also found searching for the college on youtube often yields some interesting results. In addition, I would ask your friends if they can put you in touch with friends at the schools you are looking at. (Facebook might be a good way to accomplish this). You could also ask specific questions on the school’s forum here on CC.
