Hello all, I am a second year at Cal Poly SLO majoring in business administration and with a concentration in information systems. Because of number CC credits, I can finish 2 quarters ahead of schedule if I take a normal load each quarter. My plan for after graduation is to work at a company for 2-4 years before applying to MBA programs.

I guess my question is, would it benefit me to graduate 2 quarters early (3 years 1 quarter) and get a head start on working in the real world or picking up a minor (maybe psychology or sociology) and graduating in 4 years.

Neither a minor nor graduating early will have any real impact on graduate admissions. A minor will really only be helpful if you could use the courses to increase your GPA or if you planned to go into an area of business that involves that minor (e.g. if you planned to manage the office of a psychologist, it might be helpful to understand the basics of Psychology).

If your GPA is sufficiently high to get into your target MBA schools, you do not really need the extra education of the minor, and you are able to find a good position that sets you up for a top MBA program, I would recommend graduating after your third year.

If you want to focus on Marketing in addition to your IT work then it may help you to do the minor. Marketing programs can be up to half Psych. At UW the Marketing program offers minors in Psych, since it often deals with consumer behavior.

The minor may also make you more marketable for the job market, as well as boosting your GPA, as CFB53B has said.
