How to get a copy of the March SAT, and more CB practice tests beyond the Blue Book

Lots of people have asked how you can get a copy of the official March 2005 SAT (other than finding someone who took it in March who will let you borrow it), and whether are any more official College Board practice tests available other than the Blue Book. CB has now released the March test and two more new tests. Sort of. See http://www.collegeboard.com/satonlinecourse/srpupdate.html. Basically they're trying to create incentive for more people to sign up for the $69 online course. With the online course, you now get to take the March 2005 SAT as your pre-test, and then you get six more practice tests. The online course used to only have three practice tests. However, there is actually only a net gain of two new practice tests in the online course, because the sixth one is the same as the one that was dowloadable way back in fall 2004.

So, to summarize, there are now 15 new SATs that have been released by CB.

8 in the Blue Book
6 in the online course (one of which was previously downloadable--and still is, for now anyway)
1 from the March 2005 official administration, previously available only for those who took the test in March and ordered it, now available to online course subscribers as well)

More details:

Only the March test and the originally downloadable test have scales that give exact scores. The others only give ranges.

The scale for the March test is the most trustworthy. The scale for the others has produced notoriously inflated Writing scores; I'd say 30-50 pts too high.

Other than the issues with the Writing scale, I think all these tests are pretty good representations of what you'll see on the real test. I've taken all 15 of these, plus the May and June official tests, and I think the mix of content and overall level of difficulty is basically consistent across all tests. They're definitely better than any of the alternatives.

After the Oct test, we'll have two more official tests, because CB is going to release both the Saturday and Sunday versions. For juniors, the released tests in spring 2005 will be the January and May dates, both Saturday and Sunday. So, by next summer, there should be at least six official, actually administered real SATs out there, plus two more new PSATs. That should be enough to satisfy even the most insatiable fanatics on CC.

Isn't the Pre-Test that's avaliable for free to everyone who registers on the CB site the March 2005 test (on this site)? From the site you linked to, it looks like the March 2005 test has been released as the free online practice test and will also be the test printed in the 2005-2006 Taking the SAT booklet (which appears to now be called the "SAT Preperation" Booklet). Also you said that "sixth one is the same as the one that was dowloadable way back in fall 2004" - just to clarify, is this the test that used to be avaliable as the 2004-2005 Pretest?

As for the future tests that you said are going to be released, are these tests for which the Question and Answer service is offered (so you have to take the test to get a copy of it) or is CB planning to publically release these tests?

Thanks for compiling all that info.

Wow thanks for the heads-up! I might actually get it now :P

Hey tanman. Yeah, it's confusing. Currently the downloadable test is still the old one, but the CB is saying that the downloadable pre-test is going to become the March test. And the older, currently still downloadable test, is going to become one of the 6 tests within the online course that you have to pay to get. I think this last part is kind of stupid, because that test is already out there all over the place, but whatever.

I don't know whether individual tests will ever be for sale again like they used to be. I think the CB would prefer to just sell Blue Books and Online Courses. Part of the reason they used to sell individual tests in bulk was to accomodate high schools that wanted to offer their own in-house (cheap) test prep. Now the CB is trying to steer these schools towards bulk licensing of the online course or bulk purchases of the Blue Book. Hey, the CB is just a non-profit, right? They have to recoup all their research and development costs. It must be hard to come up with such thought-provoking essay questions.

You mentioned that it was available "all over the place."

Well, "currently" is now yesterday, I guess. Because the March test is now the one online for freel.
So, where can I get the former practice test, which is "all over the place."
Is it online somewhere?
Thanks.

Where is the free downloadable test that is NOT the March 2005 SAT?
