How to get a decent score on AP Computer Science A (Self-Study)?

I’m a sophomore and I’m taking the AP CompSci A exam in two days. I didn’t make a decision to self-study until February and I’ve only been taking the studying seriously since this month. I’ve been using the 2015 Barrons review book and have had some instruction from my coding mentor but I still feel like I’m not fully getting the concepts. I tried some FRQs too but they were basically impossible for me! I’ve gotten very bad scores on the practice MC as well (21-22/40 generally).

This is quite upsetting to me as I love CS and want to go to a selective college for a CS major, but I feel like I’m just not good at it. And I even have past experience! :frowning:

I need a 4 or a 5 on the test but I think it’s hopeless at this point. How can I study effectively for the next couple days so I can possibly crack a 4?

It’s probably too late, especially considering the exam is tomorrow morning.

Of all the AP’s, CompSci A is probably one of the hardest to self-study (especially considering you just had only 2 months).

I have 5 other AP classes and I get straight A’s in them. Meanwhile, I am barely passing AP CompSci and struggling to wrap my head around what the heck is even going on.

Normal AP classes involve just memorization and study. With CompSci, you have to both comprehend the concepts and learn how to implement them. Understanding how methods and algorithms work isn’t good enough. You have to know how to create your own methods and algorithms.

I took the class for a full year (an hour a day of java) and I still struggle on the FRQ’s. No wonder they seem impossible for you.

Just try you best and good luck!

PS-If you get all the multiple choice questions (which don’t require creativity and thinking) and get at least 1 of the FRQ’s, you should be able to get a 4.
