I'm a graduating high school senior interested in making some good money this summer before moving on to college (obviously this is a lofty goal in this economy). I have heard that tutoring often pays very well, and I deeply enjoy working with people and helping others learn. I sent in applications with Princeton Review and Kaplan, but it seems like they might have been focused more towards adult tutors; I haven't heard anything back. Anyone have success finding well-paying (maybe >$15/hr) tutoring jobs straight out of high school? Thanks!

if youre in a major city craigslist is a good resource

either
- you can post for yourself trying to find clients
- you will find many tutor companies that will hire you and they will find you an assignment, taking a percentage of course

I have had success with the second method

Tutoring companies already have some name recognition so working for them where they do the sales legwork may be easier for you breaking into the business. At colleges, some folks go and put up ads (just an 8.5x11 piece of paper with tearoffs) on bulletin boards in classrooms regularly.

You might also try Kumon if they are in your area. My son is a tutor at his college and the manager of the tutoring center frequently forwards private requests for tutors (for both college and high-school students) to those that work for her. In this area, demand is greater than supply. They didn’t have enough tutors for this past semester and they are working on lining up tutors for the summer program. They’re also trying to line up tutors for the evening shifts for this coming fall. The evening shifts are five hours long in the evening which can be pretty rough if you’re an engineering major.
