How to get a letter of recommendation from a stranger

I am applying to an unnamed public university with a 22% acceptane rate and my test scores and extracurriculars arent anything too extraordinary but they are well above average. I have a decent application but I don’t feel my chances are as strong. A native of my city graduated from there and has donated quite a bit of cash to this college. Most of my peers from the Class of 15 in my situation received letters of recommendations from this gentleman because he worked with their parents.

I need to get a letter from him to help fullfill my dreams of getting into this school but how can I? How should i contact this man I’ve never met to ask for a letter of recommendation? Thank you.

I can’t imagine that a letter of rec from a man who has never heard of you could be very impactful. What do you think the letter would say? Do you think he would summarize your grades and stats or would he just make stuff up about you? Perhaps the way to stand out from the other applicants from your class is NOT to have a letter from this guy.

A recommendation letter from a stranger?! Find someone who knows you and can speak to your strengths. I think a letter from this guy would be worthless. Besides, your primary recommendations are from your teachers. Other recommendations should be done carefully only if they actually add something to the application.

bad idea

Now what if I give him a copy of my resume

I’m bookmarking this thread.

Did you even read what everyone said???

You think a resume is going to get the guy to know you better?

What are you thinking! If anything the school will reject those with these generic letters!

Why is this in the NYU thread? NYU is not a public university.
