How to get additional federal aid???

I will be attending a private university this upcoming fall. My school does not provide your final cost until mid-July for incoming freshman. Because of this, I am not sure if I will have enough aid to cover all direct costs. IT IS POSSIBLE that I will but because we are not allowed to pick specific housing for ourselves, it is difficult to be sure. I did indicate that I would like the most cost effective option. Is there any way that I could get additional federal or institutional aid even if it is in the form of loans? I am already utilizing $5500 of direct federal loans for the year and no others have been offered to me. My parents are not willing to apply for a PLUS loan and I am not comfortable taking out private loans. While I am awaiting a few scholarship decisions, these are not guaranteed. Only about $1000 of additional money may be required. Any help is appreciated.

If you have high need, contact your financial aid office about FSEOG https://studentaid.ed.gov/types/grants-scholarships/fseog</a> or Perkins Loans https://studentaid.ed.gov/types/loans/perkins</a></p>

$1000? Is that what you need?

Get a job.

This student is looking for additional money for fall 2014. FSEOG money may have already been allocated at his college. I do not believe that SEPG is an entitlement like the Pell. And I also think it has limited funding, and is awarded to the early bird applicants.

I am already receiving a FSEOG but I will inquire about a Perkins loan.

I would get a job and work if I had that option. I’m currently responsible for caring for family members within my household so I can’t get a job. I do have money saved but I will be responsible for paying for my own books and living essentials once I go off to school.

Will you be working once you start college? Is there any chance you can work even part time to help offset this $1000 shortfall?

Perkins Loans are also limited funding per college campus. It is very possible that Perkins loans have been allocated already. But no harm in asking.

You can always ask, but as Thumper says, those funds are usually the first to go. It is possible, some students offered those funds declined admissions and there is some extra, so it does not hurt to ask. Be aware that you cannot get federal funds until you pay your EFC in most cases.

I agree with Thumper that a job is probably the way you have to go whether it’s a job this summer or during the school year, or both. You will need seed money upfront for transportation expenses, supplies, books, you realize.

My one son worked 80-90 hours a week one summer at three jobs, because he had some expensive plans. Busboy, lifeguard, swim lessons. Also some local short term pet sitting and baby sitting type gigs. I used to do the same when I was young.
